About the Author

Theresa Dedmon has been involved in pastoral ministry for more than 30 years. She has a degree in Psychology from Vanguard University and minored in Biblical Studies. She has been on staff at Bethel Church in Redding, California, since 2003 where she oversees Bethel’s School of Supernatural Ministry’s second year program and is head of the Prophetic Arts Department. She travels the United States and abroad teaching on the supernatural and creativity.

Born to Create: Stepping Into Your Supernatural Destiny. Born to Create is a long needed book for the entire body of Christ to glean truths from in the age we are living in. This time period, like none other, is preparing for the greatest outpouring of Holy Spirit with signs, miracles, and wonders following. Theresa Dedmon capitalizes in her book the necessity of the creative arts working in the body of Christ and the validation and acceptance needed by church leaders across the board in order to see the gifts in the Church come forth with excellence. She dispels the myths that intellectual ascent far outweighs any creative endeavor by using true examples of how even the culinary arts, along with paintings, dance, writings, and other creative areas have transformed lives. Imagine staring at a painting and receiving physical and emotional healing. She explains that the power of one's creative talents working alongside the anointing of God terrifies the enemy.

Born To Create: Stepping Into Your Supernatural Destiny, is a treasure written for the days we live in. At first glance, creativity may mean little to you, but our God is a creative God and reaches people in ten thousand times ten thousands of ways. I cannot place adequate words here to describe the value of this book. In our times we are learning about the prophetic and healing through prophetic training, Healing Rooms, and books written with profound prophetic revelation. Theresa Dedmon's book, if applied, could alter the very community you live in and take you to bless the nations, opening doors before princes and kings, even in unbelieving and hostile nations.

I liked the story about Jim Cary, the Hollywood actor. Cary would go up every night he wasn't busy and sit on Mulholland Drive, look out at the city, stretch out his arms and say, "Everyone wants to work with me. I'm a really good actor. I have all kinds of great movie offers..." He would repeat these declarations over and over. In 1990, while he was sitting there and looking at the city below, he wrote himself a check for $10 million dollars, dated it Thanksgiving, 1995, adding the notation "for acting services rendered", and carried it in his wallet from that day forth. By 1995 his asking price for a movie role was $20 million dollars. When his dad died in 1994, Cary placed the $10 million dollar check in his father's coffin as a tribute to the man who encouraged him to live for his dream.

I had an angelic visitation from the annointing on this book. It can't get any better than that. It's time for me, for all of us, to get out of the box, out of the boat, and not be afraid to take the risks required for a miraculous life. The stakes are too high and the time is too short.

If you don't want to experience more of God, don't read this book. If you don't want to see people healed and set free, don't read this book. If you don't want to fulfill your divine destiny, don't read this book.
But if you're hungry for more of God, if you want to partnership with Him to change people's lives, if you want to help usher in His Kingdom, and/or if you want to step into your supernatural destiny, this book is for you.
Even though I 'know' a lot of the truths in this book, there's definitely an anointing on the delivery that, for me, is opening door after door after door of possibilities. The book is not just conceptual, it's practical--meaning you can experience all that God has for you, starting right now!

"Mock people who do not have a system." Engaging and Helpful Advice for Designers (Especially Print Designers)

Drew is Proprietor of Nancy Victor Gallery and Director of Navig8 Ltd. His focus in this book is on working with clients to create high end print materials, however there is much for any designer to glean from his discussion of process. The book is delightfully written, with such advice as:

"Always name your files properly and consistently.
Use an intuitive folder structure.
Test your system; if a complete stranger was to open your job folder, would they know which was the most up-to-date version?
Mock people who do not have a system."

Of interest to all designers (especially those who work with clients) are his chapters on creative process, working with clients, conceptual sketching, color, and typography. Of special interest to designers who work in print are chapters on paper, the printing process, and binding.

I love this book!

This book has a lot of useful information and it is so easy to read. I feel like he is talking one on one with you. He tells you obvious things that you would have never thought about. The book is well made and every page is bursting with information to help you with your graphic design career. I recommend this book to anyone in the graphic design field.

A Good Survey of Graphic Design Concepts

I was not as impressed with this version of Know Your Onions as I was with the web design version. De Soto's text is very engaging, but seems to meander through graphic design concepts, highlighting some and truncating others. For general graphic design concepts, it is perhaps a good book, but it might be tough for a novice designer to understand.

Dispersed into the Machinery

Let me get this out of the way first. Anybody that calls David Holbrook "debilitatingly opaque" deserves our admiration. (x)

In Confessing Cultures: Politics and the Self in the Poetry of Sylvia Plath, Lisa Narbeshuber sees the poetry of Plath "working through in detail the geography of post-war society. Talking culture as machine, [Plath] traces the lines of production of mechanical brides and grooms, underscoring oppressions and looking for openings." (x) She does this by first challenging Robert Phillips inclusion of Plath amongst the Confessional Poets. The main difference between Plath and these poets such as Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and John Berryman is that Plath's "persona often fuses and disappears into her surroundings." (ix) This is in direct contrast to Lowell, Sexton, and Berryman whose poetry more consistently "document[s] the poet's soul." (xii)

For Narbeshuber, "Plath sustains the alien moment." (xi) As such, Plath "conflates the human and the machine, finding her way into pathways of the cultural circuitry, documenting the new ontology." (xi) In doing so, Plath's "self is dispersed into the machinery." (xi) Thus through this fusion and conflation, Plath's poetry transcends simply being about personal experiences: the poetry becomes a poetry of "cultural critique." (xii) Ultimately, Plath "directs the inner, the intimate, and the familial outward, turning the personal into a cultural confession." (xxiii)

Building on other analyses of Plath and politics (Tracy Brain and Robin Peel), in Confessing Cultures, Narbeshuber takes complete control of the subject at hand and has written a sound, solid work. She is at her best in Chapter 2, which is a close reading of "In Plaster." While not an obscure Plath poem, this kind of treatment I think is not the norm. She also examines the more canonical poems by Plath including "Lady Lazarus", "Daddy," and the bee sequence, and in doing so further supports her thesis and opens new avenues into each. This is a short book - but do not let this trick you. Lisa Narbeshuber has written succinctly and there is neither a wasted word nor an excess. The economy with which she has executed this critique mirrors, perhaps intentionally, those poems of Plath's she examines and her view of their inspiration, cohesion, and construction. As far as the book itself, it is wonderfully designed - the cover of dried poppy seed pods ("Where are your opiates, your nauseous capsules?") is lovely. There is a colophon, which is nice to see; but no index, which was sorely missed.

No theory or critical approach can encompass the whole of Plath's works (nor should it!); therefore promoting one methodology over another necessarily removes from the field of inspection a large chunk of Plath's output. Narbeshuber carefully looks at a handful of poems, but the genius of her study is that the work she does discuss is done so expertly. Critics (and/or academics) really fear biographically reading Plath's poems. Susan van Dyne, Tracy Brain, and Marsha Byrant and many others seem to want to avoid it at all costs. However, each has needed the biography at some point in their own valuable contributions to Plath studies: it is simply unavoidable. But no matter what, if you look at Plath's poems using approaches such as psychoanalysis, feminist, historical, environmental or another, the biography comes into play. It is important. It does matter. And in doing so one is not necessarily supporting either that Plath should be read biographically or her inclusion as a Confessional Poet (which as Narbeshuber has argued rightly is a bad assignation). This little digression, by the way, is not meant as anything negative about Confessing Cultures. While Narbeshuber seems to agree that "focusing too exclusively on Plath's life" can be limiting in the attempt to decipher her work; her own work - just like all books of criticism - is limiting because it does not (cannot) apply to everything Plath wrote. (xi) This is clearly one of those "Why can't we all just get along" moments! The more we examine Plath's works in an historical context, the more reliant we are on the accuracy of her biography as a means to assess.

Tremendously well written travel guide for the culturally curious.

Why you'll love it:
Monocle does a terrific job of identifying neat, locally flavored, and culturally relevant destinations for those looking to visit the city. Unlike most travel guides, the book provides a solid foundation for discovering many interesting activities from sightseeing opportunities to even barbershops. Not only does the book identify a range of dining establishments (across all budgets), it provides a nifty guide of recommended souvenir choices.

The format is a quick read and stock full of beautiful photographs.

Why you'll hate it:
The book will ultimately make you rethink your budget for your visit...and likely require and upward revision.......

Must have guide for traveling, but needs a supplement

Planning an extended weekend visit this fall to Hong Kong and began with the usual suspects, Insight Guides, Eyewitness Travel and Rough Guides. This may be the best in depth travel guide I've found, and I hope they expand to more cities. At first glance it feels (literally) like a textbook with a hardcover and bookmark (1/8" cloth) permanently affixed. I would be more than comfortable to take this into public on vacation and not feel like a tourist. Nothing against the previously mentioned travel guides, I would use those as a supplement with the great folding maps this lacks.

The Hong Kong guide is broken into 9 sections: Hotels, Food and Drink, Retail, Things we'd buy, Essays (Hong Kong from family and friends point of view), Culture, Design and architecture, Sport and fitness and Walks. In addition to those main sections, a small overview map (not detachable from book) and resources for the would be traveler. One critique to the book is the lack of organization within each section, there is no order to the neighborhoods discussed, and locations tend to jump from one point to the next. This is where another guidebook would benefit the traveler as those tend to be more organized by areas. I enjoy the recommendations offbeat locations from the main tourist crowds, and this will be great to see the real life of Hong Kong.

Would I recommend? Without hesitation, but I would still consider a mainstream guide with the neighborhoods outlined and their removable maps. Overall, great product and hope to see future cities added to Monocle's catalog.

Close to perfect..

The book is lovely with great information and pictures. The quality of the binding is amazing too...published in Germany where they still value books. However, I found it lacking by not providing public transportation directions to listings such as nearest bus/metro stop details.

Sound, sensible advice on the practice of prayer

As one who recives spiritual direction, I am constantly on the lookout for books that make sense of a discipline that can all too easily be shrouded in a fog of verbiage. This is one of the very few books that fits the bill; it speaks to the reader directly, in simple, straightforward prose, and its content speaks directly to the spiritual needs of beginners in meditation like me. In particular, the chapters on "How to Meditate" and "Temperament and Mentl Prayer" were especially helpful. All in all, this is the best introductory manual on the practice of prayer that I have seen since Anthony Bloom's "Beginning to Pray."

Powerful Reading

This slender but powerful volume is divided into two fifty-page essays. The first discusses spiritual direction and is aimed mainly at the religious; the second covers the practice of meditation and speaks more to the lay reader.
Merton's commentary on direction is incisive as always. He has a nasty habit of confronting me with my human weaknesses just when I think I've made a little spiritual progress. My spirituality must not be compartmentalized, it must encompass my every thought and action: holiness is not simply a matter of going to church every Sunday, it's how I brush my teeth. Further, my spiritual life must not become enslaved to form; it is all about substance. If the essence of my being is committed to the Holy Spirit, if love for God infuses my every thought and action, I will discern my vocation and conduct my life in harmony with His will. Certainly, a lay person may need guidance in this discernment, but for a religious, whose vocation is spiritual "perfection", it is imperative. Without proper guidance, and a lot of it, proper formation is impossible and the result is often a lost soul. Merton explains what a spiritual director should be, and perhaps more important, what he should not be. Very few of us can discern God's will in solitude-most of us need to talk things out, even if, as Merton points out, it is only a matter of hearing confirmation of what we already know in our heart.

So many books teach the novice how to go about sitting, breathing, visualizing, etc. Merton cuts through the chase and offers a helpful guide to the Christian who really wants to grow through the cultivation of the inner life. But why shouldn't he? Merton's books were teaching generations truths about the contemplative life before the buzz words started to buzz. This short, easy to read book is a joy to recommend.

Incredible collection that could of had a little more

When I found out 2 of my favorites were mashing up, I couldn't of been more excited. This collection is great to have, but it could of included a little more. There are two things I wish they would of added:

-Album and artist that inspired the cover: I'm a big fan of hip-hop; been a fan since 1995. I can probably name more than 3/4 of the artists that they cover in this collection, but I really wish the publishers added the info here.

-Artists' View: This is just an addition I would of personally enjoyed. It would of been cool to read details from an artist (pencils, inker, colors) regarding the making of this cover. What the process was on making it and their thoughts on the album and/or artist(s) IF they are fans. Another great addition would of been if they could of got the rappers' thoughts on the final cover.

Those are the only minor things I wish they would of added. I like how they included the sketches and inks for covers. If I knew Marvel was gonna release these in a collection, I wouldn't even of bought the individuals. I ended up buying 18 of these covers and spending close to a bill ($100) on them. Put it this way: I bought this collection for less money than it cost me when I bought 2, TWO of these individual issues. Plus variant covers don't sell for cover price, so finding a decent place that didn't charge a lot more was a pain. On top of that was not knowing if the place would have them when I got there.

With that being said, I am grateful they released this. I can't wait for volume 2. Thank you, Marvel.

Pissed there was nothing added to what I got when I copped the single issues , what a waste of $ , though ... come out with a part two Marvel , you know why ? I no longer live near a comic book shop so the only way you can get my money now is digitally , so drop vol.2 for my kindle , pimp !

Dr Iain Murray is a lecturer in the School of Computing at the University of Dundee. Iain recently acted as a consultant for the ITV drama series Foyle’s War, which featured an episode set around a group working on the ‘bouncing bomb’. He lives in Dundee.

the last of a breed

The book is subtitled The Science of Sir Barnes Wallis. I find that subtitle a little misleading as it should more accurately be The Engineering of Sir Barnes Wallis. In any case the focus is on the trajectory of Wallis' engineering work from his first days in airship design to his last ideas for supersonic transport. The large format of the book has allowed a high level of illustration with many contemporary photographs and drawings as well as some modern CAD renderings of concepts that never reached realization. The organization of the book is straightforwardly chronological with a biographical introduction and a final summary and appreciation of Wallis' work. Iain Murray has done a lot of research into various archives and the footnotes are relatively extensive. A number of appendices are attached and the extensive log of spun bomb tests illustrate just how intensive this work was. The coverage is relatively well balanced with four of the chapters devoted to the WW2 work on bombs,one each for the prewar work on airships and geodetic aircraft, and three on his postwar ideas for highspeed and other types of aircraft.
I though the writing was clear and direct and the judgements made on Wallis' work were thoughful and fair, laying great emphasis on the true originality of this work though not losing sight of practical problematic issues. The level of presentation is wholly descriptive with no mathematical content but technical matters are well explained.
So what impression does this well crafted book leave me with? I think Barnes Wallis was the last in the long line of Victorian mechanical engineers. In confronting problems of air transport or delivery of explosives from the air, Wallis seemed to always apply mechanical solutions, often unique and unprecedented. His mathematical skills were considered high by his peers but he seemed to have used mathematics to confirm his solutions, not develop them. I am not sure his aerodynamic intuition was as good as his mechanical creativity but that may be a poor judgement on my part.
In any case, this book certainly give us enough material to think about these questions and I recommend it to those with an interest in this area.

An under-appreciated man

Sir Barnes' work (the Wellington bomber, and the Bouncing, Tallboy, Grandslam bombs) had a major effects during World War II. The Wellington was quick to build, tough and effective. The Bouncing bomb and the attack on the dams had a major impact on Nazi Germany's war production. The rush to repair to the Möhne, Sorpe and Eder dams and the damage caused by the flooding, pulled material and workers from all over Nazi-held territories. On D-day, the Atlantic Wall was incomplete due to lack of material and workers. The Nazi's fielded few tanks on for the battle of Kursk due to lack of steel. The Tallboy and Grandslam attacked V1, V2 and V3 sites, preventing their use against British civilians and Allied soldiers. Sir Barnes deserves much more credit than he has been given.

Also read "Dam Dusters, The Race to Smash the Dams" 1943 by James Holland, Holland goes into more detail about the effects of the raid on the Möhne, Sorpe and Eder dams.

John Alvin was an American movie artist who painted movie poster art for over 130 films, including E.T., Blade Runner, The Lion King, The Princess Bride and Jurassic Park, as well as the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He also produced work for Disney Fine Art (Disney character official portraits).

Insightful and inspiring John Alvin retrospective

The Art of John Alvin is a wonderful retrospective and tribute to the late artist who passed away in 2008.

This 160-page hardcover collects the movie posters he has created from 1974 to 1999 plus a special commissioned piece completed in 2007. The artworks includes the finished posters, preliminary sketches, colour drafts and many unused never seen before art.

The reproduction of the artworks is very well done. Many are printed huge and given the full page treatment they deserve. The completed movie poster illustrations are beautiful, and even the sketches are quite a joy to look at as some of them are really detailed.

John Alvin's foray into illustrating movie posters started in 1974 with Blazing Saddles. Soon after that, he got called up to create many more, such as for Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi. E.T., Willow, Batman, Batman Returns, Jurassic Park, several Disney classics such as Pinocchio, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and many more other movies.

Each movie he worked on comes with several sketches, finished coloured illustrations and the final actual poster. For Jurassic Park there were more than a dozen rough drawings and colour layouts.

The artworks are all accompanied commentary that includes the story behind the posters, on how he got the job, conceptualising and even the techniques he used to create the illustrations. The behind the scenes stories are all provided by his wife Andrea Alvin who works alongside him in his studio. No wonder the writeup is so informative and detailed.

It's nice to read about the technical stuff, to find out how he worked, for example, to create the glow behind the words for E.T., he cut out a cardboard for the words and sprayed around them. There are bits of technical talk here and there for the posters.

Overall, this is a well produced, insightful and inspiring artbook.

Highly recommended.

What is the common point between Blade Runner, King Lion E.T, Jurassik Park, Batman forever and Star Wars the return of Jedi?
It is all movies which marked the cinema, finally not for Batman Forever, which has almost killed Batman.
No, the real common point, it is because we remember posters cinema of all these movies, for a very good reason, they are the work of a real artist: John Alvin.
Regrettably, John left us in 2008, and 6 years later we have an artbook tribute: The art of John Alvin.

I am not longer going to keep waiting you, The art of John Alvin, is an absolutely magnificent artbook, because he does not make that to present us the most known posters that he realized. Indeed he would have been able to be easy to make an artbook which I would call "catalog".

No, here there is a real work, and on a real one loves for the work, that includes it in a sense because this book was realized by his wife. So we learn on the work of conception and research. I adored seeing in front pages the sheets of paper with the researches for posters for the promotional campaign of Jurassik Park.

The book The art of John Alvin, presents us in the course of 160 pages, posters in a chronological way, from 1974 to 2007 to posters Star Wars Célébration 4. What is brilliant with the work of John, it is that we have a multitude of varied movies, so the fan of Disney will be in seventh heaven with posters of King lion, of Aladdin or another fantastic poster of The Little Mermaid. The fan of Star Wars will not be forgotten with posters of movies, but also convention.

My preference goes particularly to pages dedicated to Jurassik Park, who remains a great moment of cinema for the child fan of dinosaurs whom I was in 1995. I could also speak to you his inimitable style, playing on the light, or still the sketches a lot in black and white for the movie E.T or Willow of a very big wealth. I could speak about height of thing, but I prefer to let you look at the video, and tell you that The art of John Alvin is simply essential for every person who adores the cinema.

Amazing Book, Features Iconic Art by John Alvin

My favorite movie posters are the Disney ones from the mid-90s -- the versions used for "adult' marketing. Turns out all of my favorite ones were created by John Alvin.

This book celebrates his work. His career, spanning decades, included work for Disney, MGM, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, and Warner Bros. Inside the pages of The Art of John Alvin, you'll find many examples of the art he created for those studios (and I can't imagine how hard it was to obtain permission to use all of the images!).

This 160 page book includes art from his iconic posters - The Lion King, Blade Runner, and ET, among many others - as well as concept sketches and images previously unavailable for public viewing. The book is broken down by movie in chronological order and includes commentary from his wife Andrea, who offers behind the scenes insights into the creative process.

My favorite images are from the Disney posters, namely Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid (although all the Disney art is stunning). Alvin's use of light in the posters and concept art is the work of a master. The Jurassic Park section is also notable - it contains amazing images that unfortunately weren't used in the movie's marketing campaign. Fans of Star Wars will also be pleased with the selections in the book. In summary: I really love the artwork and my only complaint is that I want MORE!!

Sadly for us, Alvin passed away in 2008. This book at least gives us a chance to peek behind the scenes and see the evolution of his creations. Some fans may even want two copies... one to keep as a book and one to use for images to hang in their house or at work :-)
