It's Like Having an Uncharted 3 Encyclopedia
By Tsanche
Uncharted is one of those games where I've often wondered why a strategy guide is really necessary. The game doesn't really let you get lost. Nor are there usually any unusually big secrets just waiting for you. Aside from perhaps treasure collecting and coming across that Precursor Orb from Jak and Daxter, Uncharted hasn't always been a wealth of secrets. On the other hand one can still learn a thing or two from the strategy guide. But one also needs to know it offers up much more than just that. It's supplemental to the game itself. It is a guide that is more about enhancing your experience rather than ruining it. And there are a couple of ways it manages to do this.

Naughty Dog Game Director Justin Richmond introduces us to the guide and explains that he wanted Piggyback to do it due to their eye to detail. Something that is certainly there in many respects. It is a very detailed guide. The foreward is short and to the point. It welcomes players back to Uncharted if they are returning and welcomes newcomers to the franchise if this is their very first one. Beyond that the guide quickly dives into the basics. For those who mastered Uncharted 2 there isn't really a whole lot for you to learn here. Any newcomer, however, might want to spend a little bit of time here. The game itself is more or less going to teach you how to play anyway, but here it gives off some advanced tips that novices might want to know. What you'll no doubt notice right off the bat however are the screenshots. It's odd to say but these screenshots are some of the best I've seen. And it isn't because they're pretty pictures. It is actually because each screenshot serves as a diagram (literally) for what they're trying to explain. From showing you why pressing R2 to reload is important to actually mapping out a path through certain explanations with a red arrow directly on the screenshot. It's a very different approach to a guide, but it's very effective. It makes way for one to bypass without the aid of maps if need be. We'll have more on that in a moment.

The guide also explains the story of the first two games for those interested, or those who want a recap. If this is your first Uncharted adventure I'd very much recommend bypassing this section and just picking up the first two games if you like this one. The stories are fantastic. And while it's nice the guide is going to catch you up to speed, part of the fun of an Uncharted game experiencing some of the action and adventure sequences as well as the fine tuned story. It's hard to say this is really a spoiler, though, given that the first two games have been available for four and two years respectively.

Once all this introductory stuff is done we finally have the walkthrough which, for the most part, is extremely well crafted. If you've never used a Piggyback Guide before they're typically about making sure you have a good experience with the game and try their hardest not to spoil too much while still giving you in depth information. There aren't that many maps in the walkthrough. Instead what you have are those diagram like screenshots. On these screenshots you'll see arrows that paint a path where to go for you. The screenshots detailing treasures have an arrow pointed directly to it. The guide is also detailed in a step by step manner. Since Uncharted 3 is pretty straightforward the lack of maps isn't nearly as bad as it seems. And the way they detail how to find treasure is certainly worthwhile. There are, however, top down maps for any place where you engage in fire fights. And again, the guide diagrams just where you should move to and go for the best cover fire. They also explain where you may find any other weapons on the map as well as pointing out what to do at certain points on the map. It's surprisingly detailed.

There are two things that make this walkthrough more special than most guides, though. The first is that the artwork and layout are very good. And when I say they artwork is good I don't mean that there is art to fill up space. The guide looks and is in thematic tune with the game. When you open it up, it bleeds Uncharted. The backgrounds on the pages, certain shots that are the border of a page or even just the thematic design of a text box make the guide complimentary to the game itself.

The other thing that is great about the guide, that you really don't see in very many strategy guides at all is that throughout the ENTIRE walkthrough there is commentary directly from the developers. If you want to learn more about the game or want to learn more about the world of Uncharted in general, reading these developer commentaries is essential to your enjoyment of the game. Many strategy guides have developer interviews in the back or maybe a glimpse into the world a game takes place in (FuturePress's Portal 2 guide did this very well) but very few have bits and pieces of developer commentary scattered throughout the entire thing to explain to players what it was like to develop certain parts you just experienced, or why they wanted to do it. Or even why some of them liked it. This alone can make the guide worthwhile just for collector's value alone. Even if you've mastered everything Uncharted can throw at you, getting a chance to learn more about the game in this manner is actually pretty cool.

After the walkthrough we get to what they refer to as "References and Analysis." And just as you might expect, here it notes a ton of things you may or may not have known. But even better is a breakdown of all the various types of enemies you run into. It'll tell you what weapons they're likely to drop, their strength and their accuracy. Very useful for those who plan on going through Uncharted 3 on the Crushing Difficulty setting. Likewise, the weapon charts in conjunction with this will show you which weapon works best for which soldier. They also give you a ton of great commentary here. They also stick all the advanced "did you know," type tips after the walkthrough as well. This effectively makes the guide good for novices and returning players alike. Another neat thing is that there is actually a trophy guide in the guide itself. It seems a little odd to have to note that but several strategy guides out there merely list the trophies but don't actually offer tips on how to actually get them.

Beyond that we have a full breakdown of multiplayer. And here they go into a lot of depth. First by giving you some general tips and some advanced ones. They also do a rundown of each weapon by giving you tons of charts. As well as showing you the power with mods. There's a lot of overview here and even those who have mastered Uncharted's multiplayer experience might unearth something they didn't quite think about entirely out of this section. All the Boosters and Kickbacks are also detailed as well and even some tips on how to use them. After this long overview there are maps of the combat zones and some tips on how to go about them are detailed. But they're only for competitive. The maps themselves aren't quite as detailed as you might expect, however, but we can deal with that. It's still an extensive section in and of itself. There is a walkthrough for the co-op missions as well. And it's done exactly the way the main walkthrough is.

Once we've covered all this the guide has one last tidbit of information. Here is where the guide begins to address veterans. There is actually a short and sweet walkthrough for those who attempt the game on Crushing Difficulty. First, as usual, they offer up tips and then they walk you through the toughest parts of the Crushing difficulty, providing you with maps and screenshots as though it were a normal walkthrough. There aren't that many guides dedicated to going through many games on their highest difficulty setting. Here, it is clearly about helping players earn that incredibly tough trophies, but Piggyback has been known to do this in other guides as well.

The last thing they do is give a bit of interpretation to the story of the entire trilogy, while also answering some lingering questions. Like... what about those odd Spaniards you saw in the first Uncharted? Were they really zombies? The guide explains. They explain about the guardians in Uncharted 2. They really give you a great deal of information. There is a downside to this, though... it kind of ruins your own interpretation of what you thought of these moments in the first two games. Given that the first two games don't outright explain these and leave them open to the player... it might be a little daunting for some to have that mystery known.

Lastly there is an index. I guess it's included in the event you get lost in all the detail the guide throws down at you. Even the index tries hard not to spoil things by highlighting any section of the guide with potential spoilers red.

In the end the guide happens to be a good one. A nice supplement to the game. It can be a little heavy at times, giving you tons of info to swallow. Especially for what so many would consider a fairly simple game. But there are some things in particular that make the guide stand out and just all around fun to browse. Developer commentary, a walkthrough for the highest difficulty setting and an in depth analysis of the story for fans are actually reasons outside of the walkthrough to consider the guide.

I guess what I'm saying is, this isn't just a guide filled with a bunch of tips and a basic walkthrough like so many guides. Many guides like to just give you a walkthrough, tell you a few secrets and hope that you learn all the advanced tricks on your own. Some even leave out some key secrets or key information. This one actually doesn't. There's depth here. And not just depth but fun little factoids and trivia for Uncharted fans in general. When you finish with this guide you should be able to know just about everything you ever wanted to know about Uncharted 3.

A Senior Citizen Review
By Bob
OK I'm 71 years old and just began to play video games using a PS3 (in my youth, checkers was about the only thing available to add some excitement to my life). The Uncharted games have become my favorite because of the story lines, problem solving, and just enough violence to keep it exciting. For us seniors I've found that these games help to maintain hand/eye coordination and to sharpen critical thinking skills, but with that said on occasion these guides provide a means to lower the frustration level when you get stuck and can't proceed to the next level. This one is very well done (the Brady editions too), and also makes a good read. I hope this review helps you in making a buying decision.

Piggyback makes better guides than Brady Games
By zeb
Uncharted 2 strategy guide by Brady Games was decent but not very helpful in that it was too wordy and not enough picture clues. This Piggyback Edition guide for Uncharted 3 is very good in that it has picture clues and detailed maps. Wish they included more step by step pictures like they used to back in the days. It's still a very good guide to locate all your treasures and best COA (course of action) although if you're a little creative, will find a better way to complete a task.
