Amazon.com Review
For over a dozen years, Carnegie Mellon University instructor and corporate consultant Robert Kelley has studied the difference between superior workplace performers and their average peers. After determining that such stars are made, not born, he identified the game plan many use to secure better jobs, higher pay, and top career opportunities. How to Be a Star at Work: Nine Breakthrough Strategies You Need to Succeed describes these tactics--which he dubs initiative, networking, self-management, perspective, followership, leadership, teamwork, organizational savvy, and show-and-tell--and explains how to incorporate them into real-life work situations. --Howard Rothman

From Library Journal
Contrary to popular belief, Kelley believes that star employees are made, not born. His nine new breakthrough strategies are "initiative, networking, self-management, perspective, followership, leadership, teamwork, organizational savvy and show-tell."
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
What is the difference between a star performer and an average worker? From his research into this question, Kelley developed his consulting practice in productivity improvement, which focuses upon the challenge for a company to adopt a common understanding of star performance and to add as many workers as possible to the star category. The latter is the aim of this book. We learn that talented people are the company, and that companies are finally realizing that star performers are not substitutable commodities but instead are wealth-creating assets. The key to being a star performer is not brain capacity or personality, but rather an ability to function in the workplace using the author's nine strategies. These strategies are initiative, networking, self-management, perspective, followership, leadership, teamwork, organizational savvy, and the ability to persuade the right audience with the right message. By adopting Kelley's star performance work skills, brain-powered employees will "get a life" beyond work, "keep a life" at work, and set goals never dreamed possible. Mary Whaley

Follow these strategies to be more productive!
By L. David Marquet
During the 1990s, Bell Labs teamed up with Robert Kelley, a Carnegie Mellon professor and organizational consultant to study what actually made their people productive. This book is the result of a 10-year long assessment.

While the focus of the work was on productivity, they studied those who were deemed "stars" at work by peers and superiors. At the time, it was assumed that some pre-determined trait such as intelligence or personality would determine who the stars were. This turned out not to be true, and a good thing because, as Kelley identifies, since the traits of stars are identifiable behaviors (he calls them strategies) then anyone can adopt them and anyone can be a star!

Here are the 9 strategies they identified, in order of importance:
-Initiative: blazing trails in the organization's white spaces.
-Networking: knowing who knows by plugging into the knowledge network
-Self-management: managing your whole life at work.
-Perspective: getting the big picture.
-Followership: checking your ego at the door to lead in assists.
-Leadership: doing small-l leadership in a Big-L world.
-Teamwork: Getting Real about Teams
-Organizational Savvy: Using street smarts in the corporate power zone.
-Show-and-tell: Persuading the Right Audience with the right message.

Kelley wants to distinguish between what most people perceive these strategies to be and the way that stars actually implement them. For example, with initiative he points out that while average performers think initiative means coming up with ideas to help them do their jobs better, stars view initiative as taking them into the white space beyond their job descriptions. (As a side note, I was struck that his number one characteristic of initiative seems very similar to Covey's first habit "Be Proactive.")

Still, I'm having trouble with the easy jump from "most productive workers" to "star." Is the objective to be better than your co-workers so that you get promoted (and they don't) or is it to be more productive, as an individual and as an organization?

I'm not sure that it logically follows that those selected as "stars" were necessarily the most productive workers of the enterprise. For example, one of the attributes of the stars was that they tapped into and exploited the expert networks but without the experts there wouldn't be much for the stars to do. One test for a strategy is to think "what if everyone did this" and here I'm not sure this particular trait holds up.

At the same time, if these are the traits of the most productive workers then we should be able to increase overall productivity by getting everyone to follow these behaviors.

Since the behaviors seem helpful, then what I'm interested in is how would we organize ourselves so that these behaviors are encouraged and naturally arise? Now that would be really interesting.

A wonderful book to read!
By Jack Tan
You must be wondering why I use the title "A wonderful book to read" and not something else if I were to rate the book 5 stars. This is the first book that I have given full score.

I am an avid reader on performance management and the list of criteria to increase productivity and recognition is not new. However, the similarity with other books stops there. Robert E. Kelley put new meaning into the 9 identified criteria to be a star performer. He gave a new meaning to the criteria "initiative", "organisation savvy" and many others. You need to read the book in order to appreciate the meaning in the context that he had deftly written them.

I believe thoroughly based on what I read that anyone who could master the 9 criteria stated would become a star performer. However, there is a catch. Robert told the reader that you need to possess all 9 criteria and to practise them concurrently. That is a big challenge because any other management book will give you praises if you could manage to be proficient in one to two of the identified skills.

I am not discouraged by the need for all 9 skills to be practised together and so you should not be either. I am going to put what I read into practice and since the average time to see results as Robert stated in the book is 2 years, I will update my review in 2 years time.

Ease of reading: 5/5
Interesting reading: 4.5/5
Value for money (based on what was stated): 5/5
Value for money in practice: Will update in 2 years time
Profound new knowledge: 3/5
Profound new meaning: 5/5
Ease of practice: Will update in 2 years time

Who needs to read this book.
By Steven Miller
You need to read and re-read this book if:
1) you are a person with an undergraduate technical degree, working in a business setting.
2) you are a person with any type of advanced graduate degree working in any aspect of the private sector.
3) you are responsibile for supervising and leading "brainpowered" workers.
4)you are involved with technology-based Knowledge Management initiatives in your organization, and you need to know how the highest performing brainpowered workers collect, process, and repackage an organization's business and technical knowlege.
The title is a clear and honest summary of the book's contents. Ironically, many of the people who would most benefit from this book would be prone to skip over something with this title, dismissing it as a non-serious or non-useful effort. Do not make that mistake!
Take a look inside it, and see that it is in fact a highly credible and useful summary of everyday work practices frequently used by the elite of the high performing brainpowered workers.

War Slang: American Fighting Words & Phrases Since the Civil War, Third Edition, by Paul Dickson

From the homegrown "boodle" of the 19th century to current "misunderstandistan" in the Middle East, America's foremost expert on slang reveals military lingo at its most colorful, innovative, brutal, and ironic. Author Paul Dickson introduces some of the "new words and phrases born of conflict, boredom, good humor, bad food, new technology, and the pure horror of war." This newly updated reference extends to the post-9/11 world and the American military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recommended by William Safire in his "On Language" column of The New York Times, it features dictionary-style entries, arranged chronologically by conflict, with helpful introductions to each section and an index for convenient reference.
"Paul Dickson is a national treasure who deserves a wide audience," declared Library Journal. The author of more than 50 books, Dickson has written extensively on language. Far Removed from FUBAR, this is a Fine Compilation
By Roger D. Launius
Paul Dickson is a superb etymologist of language who has compiled many books over the years relating to how we use words and phrases. His baseball dictionary is famous for its compilation of sayings and their use and evolution. "War Slang" is another example of this master's efforts in understanding the English language and how it changes over time, this time related to wartime phrases. This work is organized by war and proceeds chronologically from the Civil War to the present. Each war is a discrete chapter in the book, but there is a strong index that helps researchers find what they are looking for. It updates the last edition, published in 2004, and includes updates from the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is both fun and illuminating to read this as a work from cover to cover, but it is also a fine reference work for searching individual phrases and learning how and why they were first used in this way. I'm well familiar with such terms as "Archie," WWI slang for antiaircraft fire, and "check six," looking directly behind you for enemies, from the cold war era. Some of the newer terms were both funny and interesting. There are "penguins," Air Force personnel who do not fly. Other terms for them are "ground hogs," "wing weenies," and "chairborne rangers." There are also ROAD soldiers, "Retired On Active Duty"; Canoe U., the U.S. Naval Academy; and WAGs, wild-ass guesses, and SWAGs, scientific wild-ass guesses.

This is a fascinating book.

Good overall, but slightly less than completely strac...
By Long-Suffering Technology Consumer
In "War Slang", Paul Dickson tries to address the unique lexicon of those under arms in a way similar to those who play baseball in his earlier book "The Hidden Language of Baseball.

Those who have served (or spent time with those who have served) will recognize many of the terms presented here, and those who haven't --but who appreciate the lexical texture that arises from a community of discourse-- should both enjoy this book. The terms used here come variously from the mundane (the initials of acronyms) the profane and the tragicomic filters of those who face both rapid danger and burdensome bureaucracy.

Especially in the 3rd edition's updates on Afghanistan and Iraq, the book contains a few entries that are either erroneous or need additional research. The book presents "ate up" as somebody unconcerned with the appearance of uniforms and shoes. In my experience, while also pejorative, it means exactly the opposite (and includes being overly concerned with superficial matters... possibly to the exclusion of legitimate concern for combat readiness). The book also defines "CENTCOM" as US Central Command in "Qatar". While CENTCOM has a forward HQ in Qatar, its actual HQ is in Tampa, FL. Attentive readers may find other lapses in research or disputes with real-world usage.

WWI section
By Jill
I bought this book primarily for the section on WWI, which is fairly good sized (about 75 pages), so that is the only section I've read. If someone is considering this book for historical research on that period, I found the information to be accurate and well backed up with period sources. It's a pretty sanitized selection of words, however; there are a couple examples of expletives but hardly representative of WWI military personnel's full vocabulary. Part of the issue was probably the fact that the original period sources that the author relied on such as newspaper articles and war slang dictionaries published in the 1920s weren't allowed to print some of the saltier terms; the author could have therefore thrown the net wider and looked original plays from the period (which weren't censored) such as The Big Parade and What Price Glory? (which was notoriously profane!; both were made into films in 1925 and 1926 respectively and though not reflected in the inter-titles, lip readers can see the characters on screen clearly using some of that colorful soldier language) or the unexpurgated version Frederick Manning's WWI novel Her Privates We(1930). But, as far as what is included: I find it to be helpful and the bibliography (there is one for each section) will be very useful.

Liberty has relocated to her hometown only to get a knock on the door by a man she hasn’t seen in years. Review
''Their work has been regarded as some of the premiere titles that have led the way for this growing phenomenon of gritty tales.'' --Urban Book Source, praise for the authors

About the Author
These two New York Times best-selling authors hit the scene at the ripe age of 17 when they were discovered by Carl Weber. Born and raised in the most notorious neighborhoods in Flint, Michigan it was only natural for the pair to write about the street life they knew all too well. During their freshmen year in college they both received national publishing deals and have not looked back since. With smash hit novels “The Cartel 1 and 2” which debuted on the New York time best sellers list, they have solidified themselves as two of the best in their genre, together or apart. With a roster of sixteen published novels and a hefty ghostwriting resume, they have made successful careers for themselves.

Not a good Finale
By El Fuerte
The series itself drifted off and was way to predictable.... I don't lke how they had Liberty switching sides so easliy. and I dont llike how Dahlia met her demise so suddenly after her build up from the last book. I do like how they brought the Cartel, Dopfiend and Supreme Clientele series together thought! but this book was a dud for a finale

Good Read
By Ty_Sweetness78
I just finished reading Murderville 3. I have to say I enjoyed it more than part 2 but it wasn't as good as part 1. I'm glad Ashley and Jaquavis didn't drag the series out for another installment (they're good for doing that). Po was a weak man and could never compare with Asha'i. I didn't like the fact that everyone was easily tricked by Dahlia, I mean was she really all that. There was an inconsistency with them saying at the beginning of the book Liberty didn't need to steal from Po because she had plenty of money. Then when they all got back to Detroit saying that duffle bag of money wouldn't last and Liberty thought she might need to get a job or go back to school. I liked the ending and I'm glad it shows that good does triumph over evil, Liberty won and got the happiness she deserved.

It Was Cool
By Misha
First off...Dahlia is a beast...ruthless, reckless and raunchy! But I didnt like the fact that suddenly folks back from Africa sided with her soo fast...but in the end Dahlia met up with another ruthless and reckless female...her name is Karma! The whole Liberty and Po thing was a mess and she basically got with ole boy on the rebound...they never even thought to cross paths like that until they was put in that situation with the African people but I must say...it was a beautiful ending for Liberty! But I'm most excited about is The Illuminati...I love how A&J tie characters from their different books together!

To Make Men Free: A History of the Republican Party, by Heather Cox Richardson

When Abraham Lincoln helped create the Republican Party on the eve of the Civil War, his goal was to promote economic opportunity for all Americans, not just the slaveholding Southern planters who steered national politics. Yet while visionary Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower shared Lincoln’s egalitarian dream, their attempts to use government to guard against the concentration of wealth have repeatedly been undone by the country’s moneyed interests and members of their own party. Ronald Reagan’s embrace of big business—and the ensuing financial crisis—is the latest example of this calamitous cycle, but it is by no means the first.

In To Make Men Free, celebrated historian Heather Cox Richardson traces the shifting ideology of the Grand Old Party from the antebellum era to the Great Recession, showing how Republicans’ ideological vacillations have had terrible repercussions for minorities, the middle class, and America at large. Expansive and authoritative, To Make Men Free explains how a relatively young party became America’s greatest political hope—and, time and time again, its greatest disappointment.

Review
New York Times Book Review
“A readable and provocative account of the many paths that Republicans have taken to their current state of confusion.”

Los Angeles Times
“The most comprehensive account of the GOP and its competing impulses... an important contribution to understanding where we are today.”

Washington Post
“The book offers a lively survey of Republican politics in all its diversity, from the ‘transformational presidency’ of Abraham Lincoln (to borrow a 21st-century term) to the conservative ascendancy of Ronald Reagan.”

Washington Spectator
“A rich portrait of the thinking and times of Abraham Lincoln and those closest to him in the founding of the Republican Party... perceptive and persuasive.... Readers of Richardson’s history of the GOP will come away with a good sense of the complex path that led the party to the abnegation of the Lincoln legacy.”

New Republic
“[Richardson’s] theory of the party’s historical cycle is intriguing.”

Open Letters Monthly
“Sharp and readable.”

Kirkus
“Richardson makes a bold, pertinent argument.... A hard-hitting study that will surely resonate with ongoing attempts to regenerate the GOP.”

Publishers Weekly
“[An] opinionated history...Richardson aptly ends by wondering if the modern Republican Party ‘will find a way to stay committed to the ideals of its founders.’”

Ruy Teixeira, co-author of The Emerging Democratic Majority
“Heather Cox Richardson’s concise history of the Republican Party shows how a party that once saw government as the guarantor of equal opportunity for all morphed into today’s intransigently anti-government, anti-tax, anti-regulation GOP. Richardson convincingly demonstrates that the Republican Party has oscillated throughout its history between equal opportunity and protection of property rights as its lodestar. Those seeking clues to how the GOP might evolve in the future will want to read this important book.”

T.J. Stiles, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt
“In To Make Men Free, one of our most admired historians takes on one of the most important topics of our past and present: the 160-year story of the Republican Party. From Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush, from Radical Republicans to Movement Conservatives, Heather Cox Richardson recounts the GOP's dramatic history with unimpeachable insights and crisp, vivid writing. How did the anti-slavery party become the party of the Solid South? How did the anti-trust party of Theodore Roosevelt become the party of Wall Street and the Club for Growth? In this brisk account, Richardson make sense of a twisting tale that shapes our lives every day.”

Ari Kelman, Bancroft Prize-winning author of A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling Over the Memory of Sand Creek
“Heather Cox Richardson has written a much-needed book: a comprehensive and balanced history of the Republican Party. The prose is engaging, the research is deep, the argument is persuasive; To Make Men Free is the work of a major talent at the top of her craft.”

Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln
“At its Lincolnian best, the G.O.P. has been not just grand but good. In To Make Men Free, the eminent political historian Heather Cox Richardson superbly brings the Republican Party's history to life, while offering sharp and often surprising interpretations of its rises and declines, when it heeded Lincoln's legacy and when it did not.”

Eric Rauchway, Professor of History, University of California, Davis
“Heather Cox Richardson tells a great story, full of fascinating figures, of how the Republican Party has enjoyed extraordinary political success in a country full of poor people, while doing much to serve the rich. It’s a vital chapter in the history of American conservatism.”

Aida D. Donald, author of Lion in the White House: A Life of Theodore Roosevelt and Citizen Soldier: A Life of Harry S. Truman
“This is a highly intelligent, absorbing book that offers a window into the history of the Republican Party from its hopeful inception under Lincoln through its deserved failure under George W. Bush. Richardson defines three cycles of Republican principles as the party toggled between the meaning of the Declaration of Independence, which promised equality, and the Constitution, which protected private property. Touting the Constitution, Republicans tied themselves to business and rejected social welfare as socialism. These two principles were entwined in the recent Conservative Movement, bringing economic disaster and a chaotic and warlike foreign policy. Breaks under Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, following Lincoln's path, were fruitful but doomed respites. This book raises the question of whether Republicans deserve to survive as now constituted. It is essential reading in this election season and beyond.”

Insightful and Enjoyable 19th - 20th Century Political History
By Mary J. Evans
I found the book an eminently readable history of the Republican party -- from its birth prior to the Civil War, alliance with the nation's business elite in Guilded Age, reform under Teddy Roosevelt, corruption and loss of credibility in the 1920s and Great Depression, resurrection under Eisenhower, and the dominance of the party's conservative wing in the 1980-2010 era (marked by large increases in the nation's debt, unwillingness to police financial markets, and the Great Recession).

The author proposes that these cycles of reform and failure are linked with the tensions in American political philosophy between equal opportunity to pursue success (i.e., "all men are created equal"), right to private property, and racial / ethnic / religious competition within society. These tensions pull the Party through cycles of reform, corruption, over-reach, failure, and rebirth ... with powerful impacts on America's government and society.

The story is well researched and sourced, and filled with engaging texture and historical details. It combines an enjoyable story with historical analysis (without undue polemics). As a relatively even-handed treatment, it will be criticized by partisans of both the Left and Right -- and ultimately stand on the quality of its research, factual sources, and enjoyable prose.

Fair and balanced, but ultimately devastating to the modern GOP
By James F. Perry
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address redefined the country to include equality as a basic principle. His Republican Party, and the Republican Party of Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, saw the security of the country as depending vitally on the good health, education, and prosperity of every American. That's what equality meant to them. This was not at all the view of the Southern slaveholders and monarchists, who saw the security of the country as depending vitally on the prosperity of the owners of most of the land. They saw the prosperity of the lower classes not as a bulwark against natural disaster and foreign invasion but as an internal threat to the privileges of the wealthy. Richardson's book offers by far the most understandable account of the tension between these two views that I have ever read. It is well-written, and offers 35 pages of citations for every significant claim.

Very well researched book about the Party of Lincoln- the Republican Party
By Mike D
Whatever one thinks of the Republican Party whether you're a Democrat, a Republican, a Green, etc... One wonders what how it turned from the Party of Lincoln to the Party of the Tea Party and crazies in 2014.

This book is similar to Geoffrey Kabaservice's books Rule and Ruin but Heather goes back to the party's origins in the 1850's where as Kabaservice's book focuses on the conservative takeover of the GOP in the 1960's. The Republican Party was originally a progressive party in it's origins that fought for the end of slavery in America, promoted civil rights to freed slaves and supporting immigrants. Something we don't see at all in today's Republican Party. The two wings of the party have fought each other at times but also worked together to help the country. I'm currently at the part around Theodore Roosevelt's Presidency.

Conservatives (as a warning) will not like this book as their movement and supporters are criticized heavily for not thinking of the common person, intolerance towards certain groups and purging out difference of opinions by labeling them as "RINO", not a "real conservative", etc...

For a good history book, I recommend this. Like Rule and Ruin, it is clear that Heather has done her homework and research on the party.

I think this book should be given to all Republicans to show how they can once again become a majority party despite what James Carville and Dylan Loewe will tell you of a permanent 40 year rule.

Review
'... a meticulously researched biography ... thought-provoking ...'. The Boston Globe

'... the chief strength of Hoffmann's meticulously researched study is that it permits us to see the Stauffenbergs as men of their era.' Christopher Clark, The Times Higher Education Supplement

'What if the anti-Nazi conspirators had succeeded in blowing up Hitler in July 1944? While it would have shortened the war, it would have made little difference to the peace, argues Peter Hoffmann in this brilliant biography.' The Financial Times

'... a work of enormous erudition ... The book also gives a gripping and authoritative account of the planning and execution of the conspiracy itself.' Jonathan Wright, Oxford University

'A model of dispassionate historical investigation and exposition ... This book is a major contribution to a specific historical discussion and a model of immense erudition, exhaustive research, and intense moral concern.' Robert W. Whalen, American Historical Review

'... an immensely readable book, which locates Stauffenberg's life, career and personal political dilemmas in the broader intellectual and political history of the time.' Tim Kirk, English Historical Review

Es lebe unser heiliges Deutschland!
By JohnnyReb
"Long live our holy Germany" were the last words of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg on the night of July 20, 1944. Peter Hoffmann's magnificient book is a salute to the Stauffenberg brothers and most importantly Claus von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg was the real thing, a man of deep Christian principles and extradionary courage who knew that the future of Germany was more important than his life and the life of his fellow conspirators. He made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live in freedom. Stauffenberg is not only a hero of Germany, but of anyone on earth who loves freedom and respects the laws of God and humanity. Stauffenberg was Germany's guardian angel, who attempted to save his nation and slay the man he deemed "the antichrist." Doctor Hoffmann paints a wonderful picture of Stauffenberg's early life and military career. He then moves into minute detail of the plot to kill Hitler and the man whom fate had chosen to lead it. Simply a great scholastic achievement.

The ultimate Stauffenberg biography.
By A Customer
Peter Hoffmann's biography of Stauffenberg is the best anyone is likely to write on the subject. The book comprehensively assesses all primary sources hitherto used by Stauffenberg's previous biographers, plus many additional sources which the author himself found. Hoffmann's previous books, among them 'THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN RESISTANCE, 1933-1945', and 'HITLER'S PERSONAL SECURITY' serve as a foundation to this work which, all told, spans 30 years of scholarly research. As the depth and breadth of this study eclipses any other attempt to date, its conclusions are unassailably judicious. Thus, Hoffmann's 'STAUFFENBERG' has made perhaps the most definitive contribution to the historical field of resistance to the Third Reich.

"It must be done. Now."
By J from NY
Aside from being the single man in history to make several (and one very famous) attempts on the life of Adolf Hitler, Claus Von Stauffenberg was a unique guy.

Born in 1907 to Prussian aristocracy, Stauffenberg was playing the cello, reciting Shakespeare, and taking an interest in Catholic theology
by the age of exactly 12. Had he made a career out of any of these three, his fate would have been less cruel. Claus Von Stauffenberg, though, was a born soldier.

Ultimately becoming a General Staff officer in the German Abwehr, Stauffenberg and his brothers Berthold and Alexander still made considerable time for poet Stefan George, and were part of his "Secret Germany", a quasi-mystical poetic cult of sorts which worshipped George as "Master, and the three brothers were were prophesied by the poet manque as the future leaders of the Fatherland. Goethe, Holderlin, Rilke and Nietzsche were heralded as the predecessors of the movement. The problem with the entire affair was that George was not very talented and his literary salon was composed mostly of teenage boys.

Despite George, the slow but sure rise of the Third Reich (which, like most Germans, Stauffenberg initially welcomed and his inevitable participation in nearly all of Germany's military campaigns, Claus Von Stauffenberg always retained an odd detachment from his surroundings and a sense of self which was very strong.

The sheer wealth and richness of not only Stauffenberg's life, but the life of his wealthy and somewhat sheltered family--his career as a decorated soldier in the Wehrmacht, his prestige as a model, and as head of the General Staff office--makes his brutal death in front of the Bendleerstrasse in Germany a surreal and bizarre turn of events.

Stauffenberg was aware of Germany's imminent defeat, yet as early as 1942 he was making some quit imprudent remarks about the Fuhrer: "In August 1942 Stauffenberg told Major Joachim Kuhn, a close friend, that the treatment of the Jews and other civilians was monstrous, *that Hitler had lied about the cause of the war*, and that he had to be removed. He then shouted: "They are shooting Jews in the masses. These crimes must not be allowed to continue!"

Then in in another outbrust which later got him arrested, news of more atrocities sparked Stauffenberg to scream in front of SS and general staff alike:"Does not one German soldier have the courage to shoot that pig?"

Attempt after attempt failed; Stauffenberg was regularly seen carrying a "remarkably plump briefcase" (as Albert Speer put it) to three different meetings in Hitler's "Wolf's Lair" in Prussia. Once Hitler did not show up: the second time Stauffenberg's incompetent superiors instructed him to not to set the fuse, and the third time the bomb exploded and by sheer chance did not kill Hitler.

Even in the face of the Gestapo's considerable wrath, Stauffenberg did his best to get the coup de'etat to to succeed. In a most fortunate turn of events for Stauffenberg, probably, a General Staff officer involved in the plot turned on the other plotters and had a handful of them, Claus included, shot on the night of July 20, 1944.

Why? Why was such a priviliged and wealthy figure in the German army who would certainly never have been charged with war crimes choose to sacrifice his life, the life of his family and friends, in an attempt so tenuous and fraught with uncertainty?

The answer, I think, lies in Stauffenberg's unbelievable bravery, sense of common decency, and Christian background. Without these things he may indeed have been a terrifying force for the Third Reich. He could no longer stomach what was going on around him. Peter Hoffmann here gives the definitive biography of this heroic man who embodies perhaps the most inspiring example of "what might have been" in history. A must read.

Loved it
By WashingtonMom
I wish we had gotten more of John in his leather suit, but still, I enjoyed this very much. Brady is adorable, and I loved how he was never willing to be a doormat. It was great to see a dominant character like John be dominant, but still challenged when he needed to. Can't wait to see what Heart comes out with next!

Great read
By Amazon Customer
I really like this author, so when I got notified about this series I couldn't wait to read it. I couldn't put it down.
When the story started with people having powers, I laughed and thought what the H$LL?!? But at least it didn't turn out as outlandish as I thought it would.
It's a love story. When they meet their soul mate they "spark". Brady's in college and rooms with is best friend, Jake. So Jake knows that Brady doesn't date and it's been a long time since he's even been with someone. Jake is determined to get Brady hooked-up. Brady's type happens to look very similar to the villain known as The Mask, dressed in head-to-toe leather and built like a Greek God. The Mask happens to break into the Science building on campus and Jake drags Brady over in hopes of at least getting a picture. When Brady faces The Mask there's an instant connection. When The Mask touches him, they Spark. Since the timing was bad, The Mask tells Brady to meet him at the campus bar later. Brady watches every guy who walks in but none look like they could be him. Then one man walks in, dressed in an expensive suit, similar in build to The Mask. Jake tells Brady that he's Laurence Ackman. Laurence notices Brady and he goes over, introduces himself and when Brady shakes his hand he feels the Spark so intense he couldn't believe it. Laurence takes Brady out and into his car. Brady feels something is off and when Laurence says he's going to take Brady to his Dungeon, he knows that this not what he wants and jumps out of the car as it stops. Laurence gives Chase but Brady manages to get away. He heads to the airport to go home. Before he figures out what flight he can get on, he's approached from behind and when the guy speaks to him he knows it's The Mask. The Mask, John, teleported them to his home in Alaska. John explains to Brady most of what's going on and that Brady needs to stay there, hidden, until John can figure a way to make things safe. The first few books in the Series are about John and Brady getting to know each although it's mainly through hot sex. There's some drama, some relationship growing pains. The last two books are when things really heat up. Brady can't get a hold of Jake and finds out that Ackman "sparked" him in order to draw out Brady and John.
Brady begs John to help Jake and when he won't then Brady confronts Ackman himself. Things go from bad to worse but it is an HEA.
The suspense in the last two books, especially the last had me literally on the edge of my seat, holding my breath.
A definite must read.

One of Heart's weaker series in my views. Pretty slow to take off, and never really stays aloft.
By DeeGee
This was pretty tepid for Heart. I'm a big fan, but I read this in serialized form, and the last two entries (parts 4&5) seemed unusually weak from this author, who is usually able to tell a good yarn and keep the sexual tension and interest at a high level. Hoping for more from the next series.
