About the Author

Sally J. Rogers, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis. She is a pioneering autism researcher known for her work on early intervention for preschoolers, imitation deficits, family interventions, and autism in infancy. With Geraldine Dawson and colleagues, Dr. Rogers developed the Early Start Denver Model, the treatment approach that is the basis for this book.

Geraldine Dawson, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development at Duke University. She served as Founding Director of the University of Washington Autism Center. An internationally recognized autism expert with a focus on early detection, intervention, and brain plasticity in autism, Dr. Dawson is a passionate advocate for families. She is coauthor of An Early Start for Your Child with Autism and A Parent's Guide to Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism. Laurie A. Vismara, PhD, is a clinical research scientist at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis, and a board-certified behavior analyst. My son was diagnosed with autism a couple of months ago and I didn't really know where to begin. We signed him up for therapy and we had to go to a session for parents (highly recommend any parent with an autistic child does the same). This book is great because it's aimed at parents and written in an easy-to-understand language. The first couple of chapters go through what many of us have gone through using a family's story of how their journey began and progressed. What I found unique about this book is that it really made me feel like I'm not alone and that there are people out there that get what we as parents are going through.

About the Author
Hagen Klauk received his PhD in electrical engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1999, receiving the Xerox Research Award for his doctorate on organic thin film transistors. In 2000 he joined Infineon Technologies in Erlangen, Germany and since 2005 he has been a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany, where he is investigating a wide range of novel organic device concepts. His work has led to more than seventy publications and forty patents.

Built To Last Major Account Sales Strategy

Unlike most developers of major account sales strategy, Neil Rackham methodically backs up his analysis of the buyer circle with in-depth research. To develop his major account sales strategy, Rackham has observed and analyzed a large number of high dollar value sales made around the world. Rackham convincingly shows that effective selling strategy is built on a thorough understanding of customers and the concerns they can have at each phase of a sale. Mastering that strategy, of course, requires, a lot of hard work and practice from salespersons determined to make the difference at the end of the day. Rackham successively reviews these phases that he has identified as: account entry strategy, recognition of needs, evaluation of options, resolution of concerns, sales negotiation, as well as implementation and account development.
1. In analyzing "Account Entry Strategy", Rackham successively explores the focus of receptivity, the focus of dissatisfaction, and the focus of power as well as the pitfalls associated with them. Because coaching, in our culture, has a positive connotation, few professionals will turn down the chance to demonstrate to a fellow professional their expertise and the usefulness of their connections. For that reason, successful salespeople identify, nurture, and leverage their sponsor(s) to ultimately get access to the different buying influences. Rackham also reminds his audience that successful salespeople prepare their sponsor(s) to help these sponsor(s) sell the sellers' solution in their own words if they are denied access to the focus of power. Furthermore, successful salespeople not only help the buyer identify needs but also influence him/her in the definition of the differentiation factors and their perceived importance to sort out the different options being offered to him/her. Rackham urges his audience to keep a broad definition of competition in mind. Finally, Rackham explores the three strategies that can help salespeople overcome their vulnerabilities and the dangers associated with these strategies: 1. Change the decision criteria (overtaking, trading-off, redefining, or creating alternative solutions), 2. Increase their strength through correction of misunderstanding or negotiation, and 3. Diminish the competition directly or indirectly.
3. In examining "Resolution of Concerns", Rackham reviews the hidden and expressed concerns that can push buyers to get "cold feet" in the decision-making process leading to an eventual purchase order down the road. As Rackham pertinently observes, price is often a convenient excuse that the buyer uses to hide his/her other, real concerns from the salesperson. Successful salespeople need to leverage their relationship with the buyer for uncovering the eventual areas of concerns, clarifying these concerns, and helping the buyer resolve them. Finally, Rackham warns salespeople about the three deadly sins of handling concerns: 1. Minimizing 2. Prescribing and 3. Pressuring.
4. In investigating "Sales Negotiation", Rackham first reminds his audience about the importance of making a clear difference between selling that tends to focus on buyers' perception of problems and negotiating that tends to concentrate on the cost of the solution. Addressing concerns about the solution with discounts will only weaken the position of the salesperson when the time of negotiation comes. As mentioned above, price is often used as a smokescreen. Rackham then reminds his audience that the only things successful salespersons negotiate during the Recognition of Needs or the Evaluation of Options phases of the sale are the needs or requirements of the buyer that they cannot meet in order to minimize the probability that they are out of the sale. Rackham finally observes that successful negotiators focus on areas of maximum leverage instead of over-concentration on price reduction, establish and narrow ranges, plan and use questions, separate understanding from agreement, and rigorously test for misunderstanding.
5. In dissecting "Implementation and Account Development", Rackham rightly reminds his audience that successful salespeople do not rest on their laurels after getting the order. They are deeply involved in the implementation of the solution adopted to increase the probability that the buyer successfully overcomes the motivation dip reflecting his/her evolving enthusiasm about that solution over time. Furthermore, Rackham pertinently stresses the importance of account development instead of account maintenance. Finally, Rackham also observes that successful salespeople document their successes, generate leads and references, reassess their understanding of customer needs, and influence future decision criteria.
Rackham wraps up his analysis of major account sales strategy with a case study built on his research to put the concepts mentioned above into practice for the benefit of his audience.

What are the focus of receptivity, the focus of dissatisfaction, and the focus of power? If you don't know, a set of nasty surprises awaits you as a sales person. As you seek entry into accounts to which you are expected to sell, you will find it's a cold, cold world out there, more than ever. Entering a new account and successfully turning it around can take forever--or a shorter time if you work smarter, not harder.

Neil Rackham's book deals head-on with the issues of breaking into and selling to accounts that are "negative"--that is to say, buying from your competitor. But you can find the chinks to work your way in and find mutual benefits. Chances are, there is dissatisfaction in some area--with a competitor, with a technology, with a situation. The knowledgeable sales person can find the dissatisfied parties and influence them to take action. The result--sales for you and an improved situation for them.

I found the book particularly good at identifying stages of the sale, in ways different from the traditional Xerox-style selling. For example, the stages are broken down into an implementation-resolution cycle, where, after needs are recognized, option are evaluated, concerns are met (objections, in old-speak) and finally a decision is made. You, as the salesperson, are shepherding the process with the decision makers and influencers through this cycle. So it pays to know where you are sitting in each stage of the cycle in order to present the right information to your client.

This book is not hard to understand, and is well-organized. If ound it interesting and valuable reading, and think it belongs on any the major account manager's bookshelf.

Excellent book: stresses the importance of the Buying Cycle

When told by my boss that I should read the book, I initially resisted. I bought it before the days of Amazon.com - it took about a month for the bookstore to order it and get it in stock. Then I went to the store and picked it up. Once I opened it up, I found it facinating. I read it in 2 days and still tell others involved in selling what a terrific book it is. Neil Rackham doesn't preach about what a genius in the art of selling he is. Instead he takes you on an interesting tour of some of his consulting work with field sales people. He describes what works and what doesn't, contradicting some "conventional wisdom" along the way.
If you're involved in major account sales, read it. I think you'll be glad you did.

I am so grateful to Dana Howard and the books she has written. They truly have changed my life. I have a sense of peace within my spirit when I read her books. After reading The Peace of Heaven, I was so anxious to get Hope In Jesus. The journey she has taken in her life and the way Jesus changed her life has so inspired me. Dana is an amazing person and I am looking forward to her next book and I haven't even finished Hope In Jesus yet. I make it part of my night before I go to sleep; I read chapters of her book, pray and sleep so peacefully. Words cannot describe how grateful that I found Dana and her writings. God Bless!

Bryan Stevenson is the executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, and a professor of law at New York University Law School. Historical, Sociological and Spiritual Tour de Force

I have a new hero . . . Bryan Stevenson. He joins my other hero lawyer, Morris Dees, in my personal pantheon of those who fight for social justice.

Bryan Stevenson is the self-effacing author of this terrific book about the legal war he has waged against cruel, unjust sentencing practices in this country for over three decades now. His history of founding and working for the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, is told through real case histories of real people who were subjected to degradation and inhumane treatment that will shock you, anger you, and bring you to tears.

I spent a 25+ year career as a federal prosecutor, in the rarefied world of the federal courts, and am ashamed to say that I had no idea that such horrendous things were happening simultaneously in the state courts of our country. How Stevenson managed to stay on task for decades, to spend so much time simply connecting with his clients as human beings, and to accomplish such extraordinary results is amazing. I learned a lot, and the teachings of The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander [another excellent book on the prison industrial complex in this country] were reinforced.

Perhaps my favorite chapter, for what it said about humanity, is entitled Mitigation. I will be using the facts from that chapter in a future talk at my Unitarian Universalist church. "Each of us is more than the worst thing we have ever done." This phrase echoes throughout this work, which, while fact filled, also has a strong spiritual component to it.

This is a great book. Please read it, and do as I did upon completion. Find the Equal Justice Initiative and give them some financial support. They work on a shoestring, and take care of some of the most helpless and needy among us.

Powerful, important book -- does the American justice system fail the disenfranchised?

At its core, Bryan Stevenson's JUST MERCY is about the inherent inhumanity of the American justice system. As Stevenson puts it, "Presumptions of guilt, poverty, racial bias, and a host of other social, structural, and political dynamics have created a system that is defined by error, a system in which thousands of innocent people now suffer in prison." This is a system that condemns children to life imprisonment without parole, that makes petty theft a crime as serious as murder, and that has declared war on hundreds of thousands of people with substance abuse problems by imprisoning them and denying them help. Stevenson is an attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, an organization that offers free legal services to the poor and disenfranchised. His book is a sobering look at criminal justice from the perspective of those least likely to be treated fairly.

JUST MERCY explores a number of devastating cases, including children as young as fourteen facing life imprisonment, and scores of people on death row - mostly poor, and mostly black - who have been unfairly convicted. But the central focus is on Walter McMillan, a black man sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent young white woman. McMillan claimed he did not commit this crime, and he had a score of alibi witnesses, but he was quickly railroaded into both a conviction and a death sentence. Stevenson spent years working to get McMillan a new trial, and the two men remained connected throughout the remainder of McMillan's life. It's a fascinating case, one that involves perjury, police corruption, a racist judge, and prosecutors more intent on protecting their political positions than finding justice.

Stevenson's thesis is that justice itself is denied for the millions of Americans who are poor, non-white, mentally ill, or otherwise disenfranchised. Ours is no longer a country that sees compassion as a virtue; instead, we write harsher and harsher laws that demand longer and longer sentences for those we consider undesirables. "The true measure of our character," Stevenson writes, "is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned." And by the final page of JUST MERCY, it is quite clear that we, as Americans, have fallen short.

It's rare these days to meet someone who truly dedicates himself to those least able to help themselves, especially someone who isn't after media attention or self-promotion. Stevenson's tireless efforts to give solace to the many men and women on death row are both inspirational and affirming. He isn't successful in freeing all of his clients - more than a few are executed in spite of his pleas - but what he offers them is more than just legal support. He listens to them, takes them seriously, investigates in ways the police failed to do, and gives them a voice they had otherwise been denied. In the end, Stevenson writes, "we have to reform a system of criminal justice that continues to treat people better if they are rich and guilty than if they are poor and innocent." That's a tough lesson for a world too often motivated by money, power, and political position. The people Bryan Stevenson works for have no money, no power, and no political position, but they are human beings deserving of compassion and mercy. "Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done," Stevenson writes, adding, "the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice." As Americans, we can't be proud of our justice system until it offers justice to all of our people, and not only those with money and influence. It's a hard sell in today's mercenary, "me first" environment. But Stevenson's voice is one we all need to hear. JUST MERCY is a powerful and eye-opening book. I recommend it highly.

Impactful but lacked flow

I am reviewing this book in my husband's account as we share it. I did enjoy reading this book and often found myself thinking how greatful I should be for my own circumstances while I was reading it. I certainly have a different perspective of how race, poverty, and proper representation can affect how our judicial system works. Many of the stories presented in the book left me thinking surely these things didn't happen in our country, let alone in my lifetime. In that respect it was very impactful.
There was one primary character/story that the author kept coming back to throughout the book. Many other stories are presented in varying detail involving other characters which seemed to detract from the flow of the book. I could not keep track of all of the people presented and it made me lose interest, as much as I did not want this to happen. The author obviously has a lot of important things to say, it just would have been easier to follow if it was organized differently.

Great great book for the price. I had to wait longer for it to ship however the wait was worth it. I am learning new lettering and fonts I will utilize in my everyday life and in my crafts.

Great reminder of what artistic integrity is all about

Although the text-instructional section of this book is not long, it is very poignant. While lettering and font design today is just a computer-generated afterthought in too many cases, in the earlier era (this book was written in 1946), commercial artists had to really know and FEEL their lettering. I love to read a craftsman describe his craft with such depth of feeling, describing fonts as exquisite, and exhorting readers to strive for the greatest heights they can achieve in hand lettering. A great introduction, in any case, to the world of words in print, from the artists point of view.

What in the world I just read?

I loved part one of ride wit's me, but part 2 just threw me for a loop. I was confused as who was talking and then she threw in this cult situation that both father's was in when they was young. I don't know why she took the story their, but it wasn't a good idea, wasted of money.If ms. King writes a part 3 I hope it's better than this.

I would have much preferred to hold on to the thoughts and memories from book 1. In fact, I'm deleting it off my kindle all together!!

This is the first English translation of an Egyptian novel first published in 1981. With a plot and theme harking back to the works of Kafka and Camus, the novel tells the story, in first-person narration, of a man who is called before an ominous committee to defend himself against unnamed charges. The author deliberately keeps vague all the elements of his tale, including the setting (though it is assumed to be Cairo), which adds to the reader's feeling of complete strangeness and even sense of vertigo. As part of his defense before the committee, the narrator gives an interesting discourse on the history of Coca-Cola and its place in modern world culture, but when he presents facts about a mysterious figure known as "the Doctor," the committee attempts to silence him. The results are far from the usual thing--especially when the narrator murders the most antagonistic of the committee members and accepts a punishment that borders on the fantastic. The young intellectual struggles to find a subject for his project, but he soon settles on a doctor with a reputation for international philanthropy. After a year has passed, the Committee appears at his apartment to inspect his progress. Just as abruptly, they depart, leaving one of their members behind to monitor the narrator's every move, until finally he is driven to murder his observer. For this crime, the Committee sentences him to a bizarre punishment worthy of Dante. In keeping with Ibrahim's reputation as the "Egyptian Kafka," the Committee is anonymous, oppressive and symbolic of familiar social forces though recent world events will prompt readers to associate it with more specific clandestine organizations. Ibrahim (The Smell of It) creates a highly claustrophobic mood with elegant descriptions and the smooth incorporation of historical detail, bringing global depth to this work. As the dark narrative proceeds, its critique of broader social madness masquerading as civilization becomes clearer and clearer, making this a provocative addition to Ibrahim's respected oeuvre.

This was purchased for a class, but my boyfriend read me excerpts and said he loved it! He likened him to Kafka!

Speaking truth to power . . .

First off, a caveat: The editorial reviews (above) for this fine, provocative novel do the disservice of revealing its entire story like Cliff Notes. Best to avoid reading them if you prefer the pleasure of discovering a novel's storyline as it's revealed by the author.

In its 166 pages, this short novel has a lot on its mind. Readers eager to defend the benefits of unchecked globalization will no doubt take offense at the critique of its impact on lesser developed countries, including Egypt and the rest of the Arab world as represented here by Sun`Allah Ibrahim. Meanwhile, its vision of the individual overwhelmed by social and political forces beyond his understanding applies anywhere dissent is suppressed and might makes right, which can happen even in self-proclaimed "free" societies.

There is plenty of Kafka and some Orwell in these pages, and the narrator's sardonic point of view owes much surely to the author's experience as a political prisoner during the tumultuous years of revolution in his home country. One does not suffer physically and psychologically for one's ideals and look respectfully at those whose chief objectives have been to amass power and wealth at the expense of others. Readers of any political persuasion should find the ironies at the center of this book a thought-provoking challenge to whatever they believe about what it means to be an individual in a binary world where people increasingly show up as survey results, digits on spreadsheets, and numbers in headlines.

Joins A Distinguished Group

"The Committee", by Sun Allah Ibrahim joins the work of writers including Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. The comparison that is most easily drawn is to Kafka's, "The Trial". While this may be the easiest parallel to draw it suggests this is just a variation on a theme and that would be a disservice to this book and the author.
The unnamed narrator first petitions a committee. This group is made of members we are told virtually nothing about. Our narrator only makes vague references to what a positive decision from this committee would mean to him. Whatever his goal, it must be of great value for during his first audience he is not only queried on his knowledge, his is degraded, pointlessly degraded. The similarities to other writings remain in regard to arbitrary and absolute authority; together with the perversions of thought and justice they produce. Unlike, "The Trial", there is no evidence he stands accused of anything on his initial hearing. The committee after a long delay sets for him yet another task, and when they learn of how he proceeds despite the blockades put before him, the group visits him, with a single member remaining. This shadow is the same individual who so crudely humiliated him before. The treatment again begins with the total invasion of everything that is held private for the individual, with the result that our narrator commits a crime, comes once again before the committee, and receives a surreal sentence.
Throughout this fairly brief work the narrator in his appearances before the group, and in his private thoughts often expounds on his theories with seemingly bizarre examples. What becomes bizarre is that in their way his arguments make sense, and this is after Coca-Cola, peanut farming, cigarettes, anti-depressants, and presidential elections explain his thoughts.
The sentence our anti-hero receives is described by the publisher as a new realm of satiric surrealism. Whether satiric or satanic, the ending is not one you will forget, and you may likely be drawn to read the work of other writers who wanted their subjects to stand firmly in existential space.
