The Film World's Open Road

In a world where research all too often consists of a few minutes on the internet, Iain Borden's "Drive" shows how it's done, or how it should be done.

With Borden having watched an astonishing 450 movies ranging from silents to recent releases - which works out to almost two films per page - like its subject "Drive" manages to be many things at once. Overall it is a cultural examination of the automobile in film, exploring what these flickering images say about us at any given time. It also examines how the "movie and automobile industries grew together." As legendary director C. B. DeMille pointed out, and as quoted by Borden, they both reflect "the love of motion and speed, the restless urge toward improvement and expansion, the kinetic energy of a young, vigorous nation."

They're all here: road movies such as "Thelma and Louise" and "Vanishing Point;" great car chases including "Bullit," "The French Connection" and "The Italian Job;" and auto-psychological movies such as "Driving Mis Daisy," "Rebel Without a Cause," and "American Graffiti." By the way, despite what I cited above, Borden does not deal only in American films. He explores British ("Charlie Bubbles" is a favorite), European, and Asian films, too, from the well-known to the delightfully obscure.

My only complaint is that he might have tried to hard to shoehorn certain cinematic automobile experiences into specific categories. "Drive" consists of four main chapters; cities, journeys, what he calls "Motopia," and altered states. The divisions have to do with speed, terrain and form of driving. But, to adapt what Freud said about the cigar, sometimes a car chase is just a car chase. The scenes may not mean any more than the movie could afford them and the film makers thought the audience would enjoy them. I suspect that these divisions have as much do do with organizing a book as anything else, a way to bring order to a disorderly subject.

Overall, Borden's creation is thoughtful, gracefully expressed, and lavishly illustrated. So buckle your seat belt, I think you'll enjoy this "Drive."

Excellent and unique source for bilingual education

This book is an excellent and the most updated source for students, academics or teachers in the field of bilingual/multicultural education. Its large scope from the basics and historical develeopment of bilingual education to actual classroom practices and methodologies makes this book unique for both researchers and practitioners. The clear distinctions made between important concepts such as bilingual/bicultural literacy vs balanced literacy helps the reader grasp them easily.

The book is also unique and different from the previous sources in the field with its 'translanguaging' perspective. The author of the book, Ofelia García, has caught a perpective much-awaited in the bi/multicultural education field. The theories and all the information makes better sense with the overall perspective of translanguaging.

Not only bilingual education but also ESL researchers and practitioners will benefit greatly from this book. With its concise review of language teaching methodologies and theories of bilingualism, the book covers the foundations of the field of ESL and the smooth intersection of both fields. Thus, I strongly recommend the ESL professionals to own one copy.

Another strength of the book is that it reveals the myths about bilingual education in a systematic manner. Throughout the whole work, the reader is constantly educated in the field in terms of its various dimensions. At the end, the reader can clearly see why those myths are 'myths.' With this aspect, the book proves to be a valuable and easily comprehensible source not only for the people in the field but also for anyone interested in education of minority students in dominant societies. Last but not least, the global perspective that the work displays is one of its most valuable aspects. By showing various successful models of bilingual education around the globe, the book enlightens the view of policy makers and administrators who shape the destiny of education for language minority students in the US. What can we do to improve our education system so that we cater for the needs of our students better?'

Excellent book for educators!

I found this book to be extremely insightful, well detailed and extremely useful as both a student of education and a teacher. It builds on history, social contexts, and research, and paves a new, hopeful direction for bilingual education. I enjoyed its blend of international research, US examples, and qualitative research and found the information to be both insightful and practical for my actual teaching. Especially in the current political climate, this book is extremely valuable for all in the field of education - teachers (of all students), teacher-educators, policy makers - and anyone interested in languages, bilingualism, and the diversity of our students.

About the Author

Educated Imperial College, London (BSc 1st class honours, Physics and Mathematics, 1964; PhD, Theory of Elementary Particles, 1967) . During the 1960s, Fraser wrote some short-story fiction as a hobby. By 1970 Fraser combined two very different interests by becoming a reporter for Computer Weekly and later returned to science as an in-house writer and editor at major laboratories. From 1980-2002 Fraser was Editor of CERN Courier, the monthly magazine of the international high energy physics community. He has given talks at university science departments, in a mosque, and for TV programmes.

Remembering Abdus Salam

My husband, George Gwilt, read Cosmic Anger and these are his remarks.

I first met Abdus Salam over sixty years ago when we were both attending supervision by Fred Hoyle at Johns College in Cambridge. The book's description of Abdus brought back vivid memories including even his gentle high pitched voice as he told me how to look for a lost object. "If it is not in one place look in another."

The book covers many aspects of Abdus Salam's life including his personal life, his contribution to particle physics, his establishment of and involvement with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste and his role in politics.

Elected to the Royal Society as its youngest Fellow and also a Nobel Prize winner. Abdus Salam was an extraordinary person.

When I first knew Abdus, India was still united and he told me that there was going to be trouble. Trouble did indeed come as a result of the conflicts between the various religions including Hindu and Muslim, as Cosmic Anger explains. A large part of the book is taken up with religion. Abdus was a member of the small Ahmadi sect, which is a part of Islam. In September 1974 this sect was declared by Pakistan 'non-Muslim'. Because of this Pakistan, which had become his home country, did not accord him the recognition which was his due.

I think that, if this book were read, and really understood, by politicians not only of Pakistan, but worldwide the world would become a better place.

I found Cosmic Anger readable, enjoyable and instructive.

Wonderfully intriguing

Abdus Salam was one of the most important physicists of the latter half of the twentieth century and the story of his journey from a poor village in the Punjab to the Nobel Prize would be fascinating and remarkable in its own right. But Salam was also a devout Muslim and pursued his devotion to his religion and its culture, especially its scientific heritage, with an equal passion.

This delightfully crafted work explores both sides of Salam's life discussing not only his most obvious achievement in formulating the most successful theory of modern physics but also his tireless support of scientific education in the third world. Mr. Fraser discusses science, politics and history with equal effectiveness. I earned my Ph.D. under Salam but still learned a great deal more about him from this book - both about his private life and his relations with his scientific colleagues.

This book will have immense appeal to any intelligent reader. Heartily recommended.

"Cosmic Anger" --- Abdus Salam-- The First Muslim Nobel Scientist" is is written by a physicist/ science writer-Gordon Fraser. This tightly and handsomely-bound 300-page book is a must read. The book is thoroughly researched and meticulously-detailed with ample references. The best picture of this great man from Jhang, Punjab is at the Nobel awards ceremony itself where he is resplendent in his traditional turban, sherwani, white shalwar with Multani khusas delivering his stirring speech about Science and Islam.

Coming from a modest Ahmadi family (a minority sect that has been ostracized and discriminated against in Pakistan), he was a brilliant young student who stood first in Punjab securing unbelievably high marks with his picture published in the local newspaper, he progressed fast on the academic ladder, graduating from Govt. College Lahore, went on to Oxford, England, became a mathemetician, worked in the famous Cavendish Physics laboratory, came back to Govt. College, Lahore, went back to England and started teaching at the Imperial College in London. He had a one year stint in the fabled Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ with Einstein in permanent residence there and J. Robert Openheimer at the helm. He started his Theoretical Physics Institute in Trieste, Italy for the 3rd world country scientists and became an ambassador-at-large of the non-western physicists. He became a polished speaker, teacher and enjoyed tremendous respect in academic circles. He was prolific in research and in churning out papers for publication.

His life story is stupendously fascinating. His achievements, somehow ignored and under-valued in his own country were many and varied. With his multi-faceted life is detailed with sensitivity and authoritatively. The book is also a primer of the life, times and theories of major players in Theoretical Physics in the 20th century. The book is a fascinating read and is recommended highly.

Good for talking

I had this as a small child and found it really useful. Some things in it may seem a little dated, but the basic coverage of the book is excellent. It deals with important but difficult to discuss issues. It's written in a format where children can either read with their parents or read alone, and so find out important facts at their own pace.

They're having a baby now but still managed to keep you intrigued. Between meeting Saxton side of the family, Odessa's sister Ryanne mishap and a certifiably sexy bad guy (Eduardo/Eddie) Ms. Gaines knocked out another winner

I love those people. Great combo. Humor,suspense. Great dinner party. Glad mom is on the way to getting help. Good job Conrad.
Drunk Saxton, he,he...that guy. Maybe now Rayanne can take a minute to get her life on track. Who would have thought Eduardo would turn out to be that guy. Waiting on the next one.

Saxton and Odessa Blakemore

This too is a great book, with Saxton and Odessa at the helm of excitement, love, and pending parenthood. This story, as the last four, have action comedy, romance, and drama! Saxton and Odessa are once again in the mix of things and not trying to be. This story has a twist, that is sort of disappointing. I didn't like the fact Odessa's sister is a horrible person, she could have prevented some of the things that happened, but due to her envy and jealousy she didn't reveal certain things. Eduardo tried to have Saxton and Odessa killed, and the betrayal wasn't addressed. I don't like Ryanne or Eduardo, he needs to be brought to justice. I don't know how Ryanne can look at herself in a mirror. I hope book 6 will address these things. Other than that, as usual. The Blakemore's rock. Grandma Pasty, and Lucy were letting it all hang out, I love those two. I hate it will take five months for book six to be released. Great read!

Up to date, useful

As an English Teacher I love the new fourth edition of the Interchange series. The previous edition had been the best conversational course on the market, and now it is up to date. A huge advantage is that all of theaudion is made available on the Interchange Arcade website. Also, while fresh and modern, it has not been changed so much to make it incompatible with the third edition, which has been important for my students because most bookstores here still only have the third edition in stock.

When I picked up the book at a Literature Festival, I knew for a fact that this is going to be magnificent. A few days into reading, and I knew I wasn’t wrong. I was hooked onto it. The effect the writing had on me was almost immediate. Every time I opened the book to read it, the characters came out alive. I grew so fond of the characters, that I had them on my mind even after I closed the book. That, in all probability is the power of portrayal. After the actual event in history nearly 100 years ago, life has once again been bequeathed to them through the book. These individuals now hold a very distinctive place in my heart, especially the protagonist- Queen Sethu Lakshmi Bayi. Effortlessly, I was able to make a personal connection with the writing and without a doubt, every other reader would too. The effort that has been put into the book is incredible and nearly unimaginable. 6 years of massive research and here is an outcome that is so majestic. The book promises to leave you educated on the history of Kerala while making sure it holds your interest till the end. This beautiful and engaging rendering of the story of the Queens of Travancore is a must-read and I highly recommend it!
