Review
In the world of cooking, presentation is every bit as important as flavor. This idea is critical for restaurants, where a dish's appearance could determine the difference between excellent reviews and bankruptcy. Enter Styler's new work, a step-by-step recipe manual for home cooks interested in making their dishes look as good as they taste. This is no ordinary cookbook; think of it as a compilation of ideas. Ten of the nation's top chefs here introduce eight styles of plating. Delineated by chapters focusing on the art and principles of plating, the brief but packed text allows readers to indulge in various styles, including "Minimalist," "Artist," "Architect," "Contemporary European Style," "Asian Influence," and "Desserts: Classic and Contemporary." The book features photographs of chefs preparing dishes and is sparsely designed with an eye to beauty, allowing food design to take center stage. Styler doesn't seek to be an authority on plating but instead hopes that this work will serve as an introduction to the art. Highly recommended for large public libraries.

Disappointing solution for a needed niche.
By George R. Wilmot
Since becoming a truly dedicated foodie 5-10 years ago, I've been looking for a good book on plating, but have never found one. With the publication of this new book I thought my search would be over. I was way wrong.

I'm not a design-oriented person, but this book is a classic example of art direction (photography, layout, design) that is so misguided that it totally destroys whatever educational content may be present (pretty little, in this case) . At times, it made me want to scream, like on p. 153, where the color and typeface choices make the type almost illegible. While the book's look might work with another cookbook, it just DOESN'T FIT with the purported purpose of the book, which was to teach cooks how to "work the plate" to create artful presentations. As mentioned in the excellent previous review by B. Marold, the only photographs of the finished plates are low-angle, shallow depth-of-field pics that look nice but are actually instructional hindrances. The series of 3-4 small demonstration photos (taking up an entire double page, with way too much "white space") in each chapter usually show things that are basic and don't really need photos (like dusting a plate with cinnamon and chile powder) and have minimal educational value. There are just a handful of neat techniques (like the chocolate bowls made by dipping a baloon in melted chocolate), but again informational content seems oddly and poorly coupled with the layout/design.

In defining different styles of food presentation (minimalist, architectural, contemporary European, etc), the author makes a welcomed attempt at providing a conceptual framework to help guide the reader. Unfortunately, the dishes of food chosen to illustrate each category do not do a good job of defining that style as distinct from the other styles, i.e. they are poor archetypes. I'd much rather have seen one clear, archetypal dish from each category, WELL-PHOTOGRAPHED!

I enjoyed the inserted chef profiles, and some of the author's introductory remarks to each chapter. These sections pointed out the connection between style of food and style of plating...an important point that perhaps I've not yet considered enough. In other words, if you cook wonderful natural ingredients simply (e.g. Alice Waters style), the plating syle should reflect that style of food preparation (i.e. no toothpicked geometrical designs in drizzled sauces...just a toss with a light vinaigrette, etc.). A simple, common-sense point that is nicely reinforced throughout the book.

I hope that within the cookbook field the plating niche will continue to be addressed. Wait for the next attempt; it's got to be better than this.

not inspiring and not informative
By glouise
Some nice pictures...many cookbooks have better. No discussion on style or technique and certainly no recipes worth buying the book for. Check it out at a bookstore or library before you purchase it...watching a food network show will give you more information on plating than this book will in my opinion. There is also the fact this book is TINY, not worth the money or a second look it is so lacking in information. So disappointing. I was at least expecting pictures of several presentations of different courses even if there was not a lot of explanation, a picture is truly worth a thousand words when developing this skill. Did I mention this book is a big disappointment.

Some Excellent Techniques for foodie and pro. Overpriced.
By B. Marold
`Working the Plate' by cookbook writer and TV cooking show producer, Christopher Styler offered great promise as a text on an arcane corner of culinary artistry which chefs such as Bobby Flay and Mario Batali can do so effortlessly on `Iron Chef America', and yet when mere mortals try to do the same, we come up all thumbs.

The hefty pricetag from the classy textbook publishing Wiley gave further promise that the book had weighty promise. Before I cracked the covers, I itemized a list of things I would expect to find in such a book, such as knife and mandoline techniques; sauce making; squeeze bottle techniques and general techniques for decorating with multi-colored sauces, ring mold carpentry (well, PVC pipe cutting, really). In short, I expected something like a `Martha Stewart Plating Handbook' where every technique is explained in exquisite detail. That is not what this book is about.

That is not to say that there are no good plating ideas in this book. Especially ideas you are not likely to find in cookbooks other than those from the very high-end culinary artists such as Keller, Rippert, Boulud, Portale, and Tramonto, or on `Iron Chef America'! There are several knockout ideas here which are actually relatively easy to do, as long as you have the time and some basic knowledge on how to work with the raw materials.

My favorite example of this situation is the excellent little technique used to plate the `All-American Sundae Chocolate Bowl'. In a nutshell, the technique involves coating half of a simple small rubber balloon with melted chocolate, cool the chocolate, burst the balloon, and extract your thin chocolate bowl in which your ice cream or anything else you want is served. The problem here is that melted chocolate is one of the world's fussiest ingredients, as it can't get too hot and it can't touch water. But this book assumes you know all that. Of course, if you are a culinary school graduate or a foodie of long standing, this is no problem. In fact, I admire the simplicity of the technique. One can for an afternoon imagine you are emulating Jacques Torres or Pierre Herme in creating cleverly molded chocolate serving ware.

Weighing heavily on the plus side of the ledger is the fact that although there are few techniques (eight plating styles with one to four recipes and techniques per style), each technique is very nicely illustrated in a series of three or four pictures after the photograph of the completed dish and a narrative describing the dish. What is very odd is that we get no standard recipe for any of these dishes. There is no list of ingredients with amounts or details about preparations. And, aside from the captions to the pics illustrating the techniques, there is no real procedural write-up. This odd state of affairs is tempered somewhat by the fact that there are standard recipes in the back of the book for all the sauces, dressings, and other decorative preparations such as mushroom jus and bell pepper puree.

These basic techniques are far more important than their being divided up into the eight styles, which are Minimalist, Architect, Artist, Contemporary European, Asian, Naturalist, Dramatic Flair, and Desserts. To me it seems these distinctions are totally arbitrary and of no value in a `how-to' manual. And, the author goes so far as to say that it is the rare chef who would work entirely within one or another of these styles. All this leads me to believe the styles were cooked up by the author simply to make the book seem more authoritative.

The problem is that this book is not dedicated to `how-to' narrative. It is dedicated to culinary titillation, with a bit of technique added to give you some basis for hands-on participation. My best illustration of this claim is the fact that in the narrative description of `The Minimalist' style, the author paints a word picture of `a cube of perfectly cubed tuna set atop fresh corn relish and a pool of silky-smooth coulis.' Now why couldn't the author spring for an accompanying picture of just such a dish? And, no dish of that description is to be found among the three archetypes for minimalist plating.

Interspersed among the recipes and the various styles are profiles of ten (10) major chefs known for their skill in presentation. These are Wayne Harley Brachman, Terrance Brennan, Andrew Carmellini, Susan Goin, Sharon Hage, James Laird, Emily Luchetti, Tadashi Ono, Kent Rathbun, and Marcus Samuelsson. All the thumbnail narratives about and by these chefs are interesting and informative, but they are not essentially connected with the techniques or `styles' described on the accompanying pages.

The subtitle, `The Art of Food Presentation' tells the story in that this is more like a picture book of frescos and less like a manual on how to go about painting frescos. The unfortunate aspect of that emphasis is that the culinary photography is relatively weak. I would expect most or all pics to be taken from directly above the plate and at a decent distance so that nothing is out of focus. Instead, most pics are taken from about 10 to 20 degrees above the level of the table and a few inches away from the plate, so that the foreground third of the plate is in focus, but the remaining two thirds of the plate are out of focus.

I confess my comparison with a fresco picture book is an exaggeration. As I have already said above, the book does give a great little tutorial on about 25 different plating techniques, some of which one can easily do oneself, but the heavy pricetag is paying more for the mediocre photography and the celebrity sketches.

Since there are so few general books on plating, the dedicated foodie and the professional will get much from this book, although they could have gotten more with more attention to technique and less attention to flash.

OK plot, could do with a good edit
By IBM fan
I really enjoyed the first book, and this second volume was not nearly as good. A LOT of typos - every page had errors. The story was OK, but nothing really happened. If you are looking for something better, try Origin ARS or one of the many other options.

These books are also quite short. That's fine if the author puts effort into making the work above average, but that was not the case here. I gave it three stars because I did finish it, but it was borderline a two star book.

Good story, ok writing
By P.J. Sleijpen
Most of my review for part 1 covers this book as well. There is something compelling me to want to know where the story is going to, but the writing style feels a bit disjuncted and abrupt. It should also have been combined with part 1 simply because this volume actually lifts a bit of the veil to show that more is going on than meets the eye and which explains some of the oddities of the first part.

4,5 stars
By Arzoth
This second book was better than the first one ( it made me even read both of them twice) it may look too expensive but again for real fans of litrpg its worth it.
(spoiller alert)
I gave 4,5 stars because I feel its a bit incomplete specially in the "sacred arts" department because it isn't well explained the stamina and sacred arts use ratio, the auther just throws some percentages (60% , 50%, 40% of stamina cost and yet they are used multiple times in a row...) and says that in time they are "reduced" and I belive that in the skills/stats pages that show up from time to time it should also show all the sacred arts and their current cost like (triple stab and another one from the first book that seems to have been forgotten).

The Blind Assassin: A Novel, by Margaret Atwood

The Blind Assassin opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental. But just as the reader expects to settle into Laura?s story, Atwood introduces a novel-within-a-novel. Entitled The Blind Assassin, it is a science fiction story told by two unnamed lovers who meet in dingy backstreet rooms. When we return to Iris, it is through a 1947 newspaper article announcing the discovery of a sailboat carrying the dead body of her husband, a distinguished industrialist. Brilliantly weaving together such seemingly disparate elements, Atwood creates a world of astonishing vision and unforgettable impact.

Amazon.com Review
The Blind Assassin is a tale of two sisters, one of whom dies under ambiguous circumstances in the opening pages. The survivor, Iris Chase Griffen, initially seems a little cold-blooded about this death in the family. But as Margaret Atwood's most ambitious work unfolds--a tricky process, in fact, with several nested narratives and even an entire novel-within-a-novel--we're reminded of just how complicated the familial game of hide-and-seek can be: What had she been thinking of as the car sailed off the bridge, then hung suspended in the afternoon sunlight, glinting like a dragonfly, for that one instant of held breath before the plummet? Of Alex, of Richard, of bad faith, of our father and his wreckage; of God, perhaps, and her fatal, triangular bargain. Meanwhile, Atwood immediately launches into an excerpt from Laura Chase's novel, The Blind Assassin, posthumously published in 1947. In this double-decker concoction, a wealthy woman dabbles in blue-collar passion, even as her lover regales her with a series of science-fictional parables. Complicated? You bet. But the author puts all this variegation to good use, taking expert measure of our capacity for self-delusion and complicity, not to mention desolation. Almost everybody in her sprawling narrative manages to--or prefers to--overlook what's in plain sight. And memory isn't much of a salve either, as Iris points out: "Nothing is more difficult than to understand the dead, I've found; but nothing is more dangerous than to ignore them." Yet Atwood never succumbs to postmodern cynicism, or modish contempt for her characters. On the contrary, she's capable of great tenderness, and as we immerse ourselves in Iris's spliced-in memoir, it's clear that this buttoned-up socialite has been anything but blind to the chaos surrounding her. --Darya Silver

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Atwood's Booker Prize–winning novel, with its 1930s setting and stories within stories, is well suited to audio dramatization. O'Brien has simplified and streamlined the structure so that it jumps around in time less and makes clearer parallels between past, present and the whimsical internal novel. Some dialogue has been added, while many meditative and descriptive sections are absent, but the new words blend gracefully with Atwood's own, and her elegant style remains intact despite the omissions. Abundant sound effects make the production much richer than many audiobooks; it sometimes seems like a movie without the visuals, with chirping birds, clinking silverware and the murmur of crowds filling in the background. Music that alternates between a lovely, slightly melancholy theme and an ominous one, helps highlight the shifts from the protagonist Iris's personal history to her retelling of the novel. The skills of the cast almost make such extras unnecessary: the three women who play Iris at different ages capture her brilliant but frustrated spirit perfectly, while the actresses for her troubled younger sister, Laura, find just the right blend of dreaminess and defiance. Though in some respects this adaptation is less intricate than the rather complicated original, the condensation serves it well, making the story more tightly wound and intense in a way that should attract listeners who may be put off by Atwood's writing. From Library Journal
Atwood does not mess around in her riveting new tale: by the end of the first sentence, we know that the narrator's sister is dead, and after just 18 pages we learn that the narrator's husband died on a boat, that her daughter died in a fall, and that her dead husband's sister raised her granddaughter. Dying octogenarian Iris Chasen's narration of the past carefully unravels a haunting story of tragedy, corruption, and cruel manipulation. Iris and her younger sister, Laura, are born into the privileged Canadian world of Port Ticonderoga in the early part of the 20th century. At 18, Iris is the marital pawn in a business deal between her financially desperate father and the ruthless, much-older industrialist Richard Griffen. When the father dies, the rebellious Laura is forced to move into Richard's controlling household, accelerating the tangled mess of relentless tragedy. At this point, Atwood brilliantly overlays a second story, an sf novel-within-a-novel, credited to Laura Chasen, that features nameless lovers trysting in squalor. Some readers may figure out Atwood's wrap-up before book's end. Worry notDnothing will dampen the pleasure of getting there. Highly recommended.

One of the best nested stories I've read.
By James B.
In The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood weaves a large number of narratives together to tell one story of love and loss. Each story feeds off of the other in an organic way, all building to a very somber conclusion.

The main character of this novel is Iris Griffen, an elderly woman nearing the end of her life. The first story is how she lives in the modern age (the 1990's). The second is the biography she's writing about her early life with her family, particularly her sister Laura. Laura killed herself in 1945, and had a novel published posthumously, the titular 'the Blind Assassin'. This novel is the third story, detailing a love affair between a rich woman unsatisfied with her life and a communist-sympathizing pulp fiction writer. During the affair, he tells the woman a made up love story about planet Zyrcon. This is the actual 'blind assassin' story. All four of these tales feed into the life story of Iris Griffen.

While Iris is certainly a sympathetic protagonist, the real star of this novel is Atwood's prose. This book is filled with wry, humorous descriptions of life and people, and she excels at being able to give each character a unique voice. I can certainly see why this won the Booker prize.

Densely Written... Story within a Story... One of my All Time Favorites!
By booknosh
Cut to the Chase:
A novel within a novel with little stories nested in between, this is an intricately woven tale about two sisters’ loves and lives, spanning over six decades. There are three distinct sections to this novel: a series of flashbacks by an octogenarian who initially claims she’s unsure who she is or why she’s cataloguing all of this, a series of local newspaper articles detailing the social events, political ambitions, and deaths of some of the more prominent characters, and a novel (also titled The Blind Assassin) that switches between detailing a love affair between a wanted man and a socialite and a fantastical science fiction story about an ancient destroyed world where virgins are still sacrificed and the woven blankets are measured by how many children lost their sight weaving them. If I had to be picky, I would say that yes, some of the twists are a little predictable, but overall, this is, in my opinion, Atwood at her best — it’s thoroughly well-written, crafted, thoughtful, provocative, and masterful. Rereading it now, almost a decade later, it is still my favorite work by her.

Greater Detail:
Our two main protagonists are Laura Chase and Iris Chase Griffen, the wealthy daughters of Captain Chase, an alcoholic war veteran who runs a button factory more by moral principles than economic realities. They’re more or less raised by a loyal servant named Reenie after their mother passes away (complications from childbirth), with their father slowly running the business into the ground, and neither of them really trained for life outside of their sprawling estate. Though the tone with which they interact with one another is often quite pitiless, these are both strong, engaging characters, struggling to make sense of the world around them.

We begin with Laura’s death: though it is officially ruled an accident, witnesses say she drives off the cliff on purpose, and one of the leading threads of the story is for us to find out how we got to such a pivotal point. We learn that Iris had a novel by Laura published posthumously, and that this book ended up being quite scandalous (for the time period). Detailing an illicit love affair between a socialite and a science fiction pulp writer, it’s something that her sister Iris notes (in the present) would hardly turn heads now, but at the time, was racy and divisive enough to inspire hate mail and censorship, as well as memorial awards decades later. Further, the book had personal ramifications for the characters in sometimes surprising ways, triggering a suicide and other reveals.

Some of the parts with Iris in the present feel a little slower relative to the pacing and urgency with which the characters interact in the novel-within-a-novel setting, but overall, it’s nicely juxtaposed throughout, and though these are women who have survived a series of tragedies, sometimes by judging themselves and others quite mercilessly, you feel for them both — the way they’ve purposefully and accidentally influenced, loved, protected and hurt each other, sometimes with the best of intentions, sometimes with no awareness whatsoever.

I read and loved it a decade ago, when it first came out, and though I’ve since read almost everything (from poetry to her novels) by Atwood, this remains my favorite — its plot feels the most ambitious, and the relationships and characters detailed, sharp and unforgettable.

Comparisons to Other Books and Authors:
One of the things I’ve loved about both Atwood and Kurt Vonnegut is that they tend to tread and blend the lines between science fiction and what’s more traditionally considered literary fiction. The novel-in-a-novel part of this are the free-form, grammar-be-damned styles that Vonngeut, or perhaps Junot Diaz in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, might use. This has been balanced wonderfully by the more lethargic present-time ruminations, and the generational tension and stories mired in decades of familial history is similar to Empire Falls by Richard Russo. I still think it’s Atwood’s most successfully ambitious and balanced work, with protagonists more deserving of empathy than our lead in Alias Grace and technically far more well crafted than Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

A melancholy tale that reads like a Greek tragedy
By DaveL
First, I think The Blind Assassin is a masterpiece, a beautifully written chronicle of family decline and personal tragedy. The narrator, Iris Chase, takes us from her grandfather's ascension into industrial age wealth through the death of two of three sons in World War I, leaving the third son, her father, shattered and disillusioned This leads to the near abandonment of his two daughters, Iris and her enigmatic younger sister, Laura, to the care of their housekeeper.

Iris, now in in her elder years and sickly, is recording the family's past in a memoir/confessional to her estranged granddaughter. She writes movingly of her current life and the trials of old age, her family history, and her disastrous marriage of convenience, but most of all, she gradually reveals the truth about the defining moment of her life--the death of Laura (no spoiler here--the first line of the book is: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge.") This is a slow, melancholy tale that reads almost like a Greek tragedy.

The characterization is rich and the author creates a somber mood that pervades throughout. But Ms. Atwood doesn't make it easy for the reader. There are plots within plots, novels within novel within novels, some of whose narrators are left intentionally vague to conceal the twist at the end. While there were times when the changing point of view was jarring, the overall effect was compelling.

Still, as I was reading, I felt the paradox of plowing through a novel I was thoroughly enjoying. I wondered if the editor of a less famous author might have taken her aside and said: your writing is wonderful, my dear, but you're spoiling the story. I fully appreciate that we live in the age of text messaging and Twitter, and that attention spans are at an all-time low. The fashion of the day is less detail, not more. But beautifully written prose can still captivate an audience when used in an appropriate way. And that's where my problem lies.

Is each word, phrase, sentence and paragraph beautifully written? Yes. Are they all appropriate for the mood of the story? Absolutely. Are they all necessary? Not so much.Pace is part of a writer's craft as well. And the level of detail in this book spoils the story.

The blind assassin is a wonderful novel, but takes time and patience to get through. I could have lived with at least a hundred pages less of it.

Awesome!

I never write reviews but this book was great! John and Sophia both went thru so much and for them to be able to be together and be so loving was awesome. I like that they were real people and they responded accordingly. I don't like books where we all know that is NOT how you would've responded. I will read ANYTHING. By her. Fantastic.

I Could Barely Breathe
By Cafe au lait Diva.
I read Barely Breathing this weekend and I was so there!! My heart bled for John and Johnny so much. I wanted to break my foot off in Amy's behind. She was sooo wrong on so many different levels and all of that was not about her alcohol problem. John is confused and his heart has been damaged soo much by Amy.

Sophia and Cara stole my heart. I felt their love and Sophia's pain and fear. Sophia had so much inner strength to endure what she went through and still be able to love and trust.

I love how Jason and Kay were there for John, Amy and Sophia. They used their own situation to help their friends navigate a touchy and dangerous road.

I cried as I always do when reading Ancelli's books. The realism and the connection I feel makes me feel as if it is my story.

Another Good Read
By P.
Another good one from this author. Amy was a trooper in Stronger Than Ever, but was totally off the chain in this book. She was straight up crazy. My heart went out to John and the mess he had to deal with from her. I still am interested to know what the test results revealed. I don't think he is the biological father. Sophia has drama of her own, on the run and always looking over her shoulder. The way these two come together is so messed up but they eventually find their happily ever after.
