this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite

In my humble opinion, this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite, Voyage) or the iPhone (4.7 screen or smaller).

There is also a side-by-side version of this text, which would be better for a Kindle Fire or iPad, iPhone (5.5 screen).

This has a comparative version and a modern version. It is very easy to read and understand. Middle English although poetic, can be overwhelming. The Canterbury Tales is a masterpiece, and deserves a place besides Shakespeare.

Don't buy the Kindle edition

This is not easy to read in Kindle format. In paperback, it has two translations: one in Middle English, the other in Modern English. These are displayed side by side, with the earlier English on the left, Modern on the right. When it comes to the Kindle edition, there are no breaks between these translations. It switches back and forth without any notice, making it really difficult to follow. It would be alright if we could view it page by page (in it's original format), but without that option it's harder to understand. (Yes, it's obvious which part is which, but finding where it stops and starts takes away from the reading experience. It's too choppy.)
In short, buy the paperback or perhaps a different Kindle edition. The format makes this a challenge to read.

good value for a nice edition

If you're looking for a fairly complete (includes The Parson's Tale) hardcover edition of Chaucer's unfinished masterpiece you could do far worse than this effort by Chartwell Books. The modern translation is by Frank Ernest Hill and is serviceable, if not considered particularly trendy by Chaucer buffs (try the Hackett Publishing edition w/ the Joseph Glaser translation if you want trendy). It includes a number of facsimile title pages (in B&W) from the exalted Kelmscott Chaucer published by William Morris in 1896. The woodblock prints were created by Edward Burne-Jones and add to the telling of each tale. Most include snippets of Chaucer's original middle english text.

This is a reader's edition in modern prose and should not be confused with the Riverside Chaucer or other academic publications. It's oversize, sturdily bound and very attractive to boot. At less than $19* it's highly recommended.

* As a point of info for prospective purchasers; this volume is readily available from a variety of sellers and amazon is very price competitive when the volume is in stock. However, when the book was out of stock for the last month or so a flurry of "marketplace vultures" swept in charging $50 & up for "new" copies. This is NOT the "Kelmscott Chaucer" that has been reintroduced; though it is a facsimile and a very nice edition. Don't be fooled and don't pay more than $20 for it. The reintroduced Kelmscott (monochrome) sells for about $40 and is still available.

Combination of Lajos Egri + John Cleaver on Character

This book seemed to be one-half Lajos Egri (The Art of Creative Writing) and one-half John Cleaver (Immediate Fiction). Like both of these authors, Brandilyn Collins explains how to create well-developed, compelling characters that you can let loose in your stories.

All of the author's techniques tie back to Stansislavsky's "Method Acting." Each chapter starts with an analysis of one of techniques of Method Acting. Then that technique is summarized in terms of ficiton writing. The remaining chapter fills in the details and gives examples.

In addition to the techniques of character development, the author presents several narrative frameworks for the overall plotting of the story. She also discusses crafting each scene using character objectives that flow from the character's Inner Values.

The chapter on dialog was interesting. Here, the author shows you how to link the hidden-message of dialog (sub-texting) back to the richly-developed psychological profile, or inner values, of the character.

I liked the book very much - particularly her conceptualization of Method Acting back to narrative writing and her well-explained examples. This book is different than many others describing character development. The author also includes exercises that the reader can pursue.

The start of a new era in character development

If you want to get a headstart into what is to come in the next wave of character development then get this book. In my opinion, the future of character development and the secrets in creating a real person on paper lies in the studies done by professional acting coaches.
How did I get this opinion? Well, I was so enlightened by the information in this writing manual that I read the books by the acting coaches Collins refers to and discovered that Collins has scraped the surfaced on a whole science. These acting coaches studied human behavior not only from a scientific point of view but from a sensory point of view. At the time these "Acting Scientists" wrote these books, human behavior sciences like psychology, psychiatry and hypnotherapy were making great strides and right along with them, "Acting Scientists" were adding these priniciples to their acting methods creating a science that changed acting forever. And today, thanks to Collins, Novelists who want to create a real person can benifit handsomely.
There is a thin line between a great novelist and a great actor and I hope to see more acting techniques being translated for the novelist who wants to be great.

What more can I say?

The other reveiwers have it right. After studying more than 30 titles on the craft of writing, I can say that this is by far the most useful work on developing believable and well-rounded characters that I have seen to date. The information is timely, practical, and accessible. The examples are well-organized and perfectly suited to the material. The writer can take what he learns and put into practice immediately. Excellent work!

This is a list of Karl Terzaghi's first 256 papers and reports - by Bjerrum, et al., John Wiley and Sons, 1960. An update was published by Geotechnique, March 1964.
Terzaghi won the Norman Medal of ASCE four times (1930, 1943, 1946, and 1955). He was given nine honorary doctorate degrees from universities in eight different countries. He started modern soil mechanics with his theories of consolidation, lateral earth pressures, bearing capacity, and stability.

Largely unreadable.

Purchased and read this book for an academic course. Perhaps the most difficult book I've ever had to read. With the exception of a few chapters the material is overcomplicated and a struggle to decipher. Personally, I don't have time to sift through the convolutions of this writing style. I almost think the authors/editors produced this book to drum up consulting business for themselves. After I struggled through a chapter on a key concept and barely understood it, I would simply Google it, find other sources, and realize that it was really a fairly simple concept to learn. It's too bad because this should be an excellent handbook of PSMs. The editors have assembled a useful collection of tools and techniques, and the format (a chapter on the concept followed by a chapter showing a real world practical application of the concept) appears to be designed to be highly pedagogical. This might be ok as a supporting reference but don't make it your primary text on problem structuring methods.

Each chapter devoted to these efforts explains the wisdom of these skillful pursuits and then closes with a "key points" list to summarize highlights. This work is best suited to readers who are very new to Buddhism or who want a taste of the tradition served in a thoroughly American style. Gunaratana (Mindfulness in Plain English) writes in a very simple form and uses highly accessible illustrations to teach. For example, "Even though unskillful deeds may bring temporary happiness when, for example, a drug dealer is pleased with his shiny new car the Buddha pointed out that wrong actions always lead to harm." Two years ago, Executive Orders, which thrust Jack Ryan into the Oval Office, raised the bar for its immensely popular author. This first Clancy hardcover since then, though a ripping read, matches its predecessor neither in complexity nor intensity nor even, at 752 pages, length, despite a strong premise and some world-class action sequences. Instead of everyman Ryan, its lead is the more shadowed John Clark, the ex-Navy SEAL vigilante of Without Remorse who has appeared in several Ryan adventures. Clark now heads Rainbow Six, an international special-ops anti-terrorist strike force?and, despite the novelty of the conceit, that's a problem, as the profusion of protagonists, though sharply drawn (including, most notably, "Ding" Chavez, Clark's longtime protege), deprives the book of the sort of strong central character that has given Clancy's previous novels such heart. The story opens vigorously if arbitrarily, with an attempted airline hijacking foiled by Clark and Chavez, who happen to be on the plane. After that action sequence, the duo and others train at Rainbow Headquarters outside London, then leap into the fray against terrorists who have seized a bank in Bern, Switzerland. And so the pattern of the narrative is set: action sequence, interlude, action sequence, interlude, etc., giving it the structure and pace of a computer game. A major subplot involving bioterrorism that evolves into an overarching plotline syncopates that pattern, though Clancy's choice of environmentalists as his prime villains will strike some readers as odd. All of Clancy's fans, however, will revel in the writer's continued mastery at action writing; Rainbow's engagements, which occupy the bulk of the novel, are immensely suspenseful, breathtaking combos of expertly detailed combat and primal emotion. Clancy's new one is a sequel to Executive Orders (1996) starring not Clancy main-man Jack Ryan, who, though in the Oval Office, is offstage throughout, but ex-SEAL John Clark, still formidable as a CIA man leading, as "Rainbow Six," an elite counterterrorist organization against biotech billionaire John Brightling. Brightling plans to further tailor the Ebola virus featured in EO to wipe out most of humanity and restore the earth to its "natural" condition. He and his revolting crew of ecoterrorists never quite come to life, so Clark and Co. sometimes seem not to be facing a foe worthy of their steel. But technical detail abounds, as do absorbing secondary characters, including Clancy-philes' old friend Ding Chavez, who in the course of things makes Clark a grandfather, and one of Clancy's more imaginative characterizations, unscrupulous ex-KGB colonel Dimitri Popov, who at first supplies Brightling with accomplices but later recoils in horror from the man's genocidal lunacy. And there are four counterterrorist actions as grippingly depicted as anything Clancy has ever done--set pieces guaranteed to keep thriller readers flipping pages into the wee small hours. Those who have not made their peace with Clancy's political agenda and fondness for technical detail (e.g., what happens to a human head struck by a sniper round) can again steer clear in good conscience. More relevant as time passes

I have read this book six times. It only gets more relevant as time passes. The reality is that Tom Clancy foresaw what terrorism could become on a world stage. His choice of cause for the ideology is interesting, but you can put any purpose as a motivation for their despicable deeds. A multinational anti-terror strike-force is just what the world needs. It's full of the signature Clancy action-on-every-page. You don't want to pass on this one!

A Look at Counter Terrorist Spec Ops Forces - Rainbow Six fits the Bill

In Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy takes aim at international terrorism through the eyes of his two boots on the ground characters, John Clark and "Ding" Chavez. In the work, Clancy gives us an up close and personal view of what it takes to be a "Spec Ops" trooper battling the ideologically motivated but ill trained and what Clancy characterizes as often irrational actors who perpetrate terrorism. At the same time, he gives us a deeper look at his two main "boots on the ground" characters: Clark and Chavez.

Fans of Clancy and the techno thriller genre will relish the detailed descriptions of the eclectic skills and disciplines needed by counter-terror Spec Ops troopers. They'll also enjoy the deep psychological analyses of the various ideologies that motivate terrorists, particularly the convoluted logic of the book's main antagonist, John Brightling the CEO of the Horizon Corporation. Finally, Clark's "creative" way of dealing with Brightling and his followers, who have essentially placed themselves in a position "beyond the law" will surprise and delight fans of the former SEAL and CIA field officer.

This is a must read for die hard Clancy fans, those who enjoy the action . danger faced by Clark and Chavez, and those who want additional insight in the mind of the international terrorist

A good book never loses its colors

This book is proof against those who argued that entertainment can only be found in the eletronic transmission. The pen is being said to have been mightier than the sword. Let me add to this dictum a little further; nothing can be afoot without outlining everything first on paper. The delight for being entertained by a book is different from the thrilling of a movie or video game. Rainbow Six has been criticised as a typical Tom Clancy book that English professors would scoff at. I beg to differ as the key to good writing is not about the coining of brilliant proverbs; Mr. Clancy was not trying to make his Rainbow troopers gun-totting poets. It takes skillful weaving to stitch together a complicated plot and still hang on solidly as one piece as a whole. Mr. Clancy certainly has a flawless gift in the interaction of his characters. It is not easy to sound natural and genuine in a profession that you are not affiliated with. In short, to sound military when you are in actuality a civilian, it certainly is challenging to come off ordinary. The author has triumphed in this. One can watch a movie and be mesmerized by its cinematic beauty, or play a video game and be ecstatic about its brilliant graphics and intensed gameplay. But all being said, reading is simply enthralling. There is absolutely no substitute, in whatever medium, for a good book. Earlier this year I had the pleasure of giving a Chuck Pfarrer book to a video game addict. He was blown away by this gift, hard cover quality and all, and gobbled up a few chapters within a night. By the time he finished reading it, he hungered for more the literature of this genre. He saw a copy of my Rainbow Six and begged for it. I refused and said that it is my bible. This novel is truly canon to its successful franchise.

About the Author
Cheryl Louise Gillespie, blind from early childhood, was born in Perth Andover, New Brunswick Canada. Her family lived in Grand Falls and Woodstock before settling in Fredericton NB. Tigger and Jasper’s New Home is a story of true events experienced by the author and her two cats. Cheryl wrote this book with the hope of introducing a blind character to young children in a humourous and gentle manner. After graduating from Fredericton High School, Cheryl studied through the Royal Conservatory of Music and attained First Class Honours in piano, as well as in music theory and history. Private singing lessons have also been an important part of her music training. In 1993, she was the recipient of the Stanley B. Cassidy Memorial Award, presented by The Fredericton Music Society, for her dedication to excellence and personal achievements. As a member of the Fredericton Music Teachers’ Association, Cheryl continues to teach piano lessons which has been her passionate devotion since 1986.

Mara brings Ancient Egypt to life!

Mara is a wonderful heroine for young girls. Set in the time of Hatshepsut, Pharoah of Egypt, this small novel brings to life a distant era with remarkable clarity. McGraw has crafted her vision of the period around an exciting palace intrigue. The character of Mara, a young slave girl, is an excellent example for young women and it is remarkable to find in a book that was written in the 1950s. If you know a young woman of 9 to 14, give her this book.

This is one of the best books that I have ever read - how fortunate that it is still in print after all these years! I first encountered this excellent novel in 1961. I read it at least 20 times. I was too poor to purchase, so I copied the book out in about 10 school scribblers. True! When my daughter was 10, I bought a copy for her and another for myself.

McGraw's interpretation of the era can easily be faulted, but her sense of "Egypt" cannot. This book sent me on an investigative journey into the subject of Egyptology that has been a distinct pleasure all my life. I highly recommend this wonderful tale.

New generation of readers, meet Mara!

When I was in junior high school, I read this book and loved it. In fact, I read it over and over, and recently sent a copy to my niece as a 12th birthday gift. Mara, the spunky 17-year-old slave girl, is a wonderful role model for adolescent girls: far from perfect (in fact, rather devious), but brave and eventually quite heroic as she risks death rather than betray the people and ideals that she loves. I'm not entirely happy with the fact that Queen Hatshepsut, another feminist heroine of mine, was the villain of this novel. For the record, the real Hatshepsut ruled Egypt for many years of peace and prosperity, and as far as we know, died peacefully of old age. Her stepson (NOT her brother) Thutmose then destroyed her statues and inscriptions in a fit of petulant pique, but did not overthrow her.
Still, who cares? This version makes a wonderful, swashbuckling story, and also provides an excellent introduction to the culture of ancient Egypt for kids who are curious about its history.

An enchanting introduction to the ancient world

This was the first novel I ever read (when I was 12) that transported me to the ancient world. I loved it so much that, many years later, I still have a copy of it on my bookshelf. Mara is a terrific heroine: courageous, imaginative, adventurous, and self confident. However, she also has the ability to be deceptive when she needs to be in order to survive. Because of her gift for languages, Mara is bought out of slavery to serve as interpreter between pharoah Hatshepsut's brother Thutmose and his betrothed, an unhappy Babylonian princess. She is supposed to be a spy on behalf of Hatshepsut's supporters, but circumstances force her to become a double agent, who also reports to Thutmose. This places her in the center of dangerous court intrigues. The story combines vivid historical detail, engaging characters, suspenseful adventures, and a touching love story. Although it was written for a young adult audience, adult readers can also find this very enjoyable. I agree with other reviewers: this would make a wonderful movie!
