James Cook is a Java software developer from London, England. He is currently touring Australia. He has developed software ranging from banking and mobile applications to games. He has worked for large gaming companies, such as Electronic Arts, Playfish, and Plumbee. During the day, he can be found working on rapid application prototyping for new social casino experiences. However, during the night, he collaborates with his longtime working partner, Dan Smallman, for Super Cookie Games to create games such as Super Bomb Noms, OMG Dancer!, and Betamax―Sherbet Plains. Super Cookie Games started out as a simple endeavor for James and Dan to learn how to make games and deliver them to Android, iOS, and the Web. A great, up-to-date LibGDX guide

LibGDX has quickly become the darling of the cross-platform game development world for those ideas that need a bit more power than HTML5 and mobile wrappers can provide. The issue with most books I have found is not actually in the books, but in LibGDX itself. It has been moving and evolving so fast that many of the books on the market today are already outdated. They either use the old project setup method, which is much more difficult and not recommended or the text is so out of date the instructions are worthless.

But with word in the LibGDX community that the codebase is stabilizing, this new book fits the bill very well. Going through the initial setup, the pictures and instructions matched-up perfectly, and hopefully will for a long time now that the work flow is more mature. I had no problem setting up my environment at all following this book, and I was also happy to see the author using Jetbrains IDEs (although you can still use Eclipse, and the author describes how).

One of the main things I enjoyed about this book is the multi-game style. Most game dev books are in one of two camps: build one larger game through the whole book, or several smaller games. I tend to prefer the latter, since you get to see more varied solutions to a wide variety of problems. It also allows the author to mold each game around the topic being discussed. The only downside is that you have a bit of boilerplate setup for each game before you can tackle the star topic, but the author does re-use code from earlier chapters, and the code is of course available for download if you don't want to keep going through the setup each time.

An important distinction that potential readers would probably want to know up-front is that most of the book assumes deployment to desktop platforms. There is a nice treatment near the end that discusses porting to mobile devices, so you aren't left out in the cold, but it will take a bit of self-guided research to completely convert all the games in the book to mobile format (mostly centering around touch input and mobile design itself). Since most developers are likely coming to LibGDX to learn mobile development, that is kind of surprising, but I did not feel the need to remove a star since this book will still get you 95% of the way there. Learning the core of LibGDX is the largest hurdle, and this book fits that bill nicely.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book for learning the basics of LibGDX. It is a fairly short, easy read that still tackles a ton of topics. You may still need a bit of outside research if your aim is mobile game development, but you will have the foundation to do that. Plus, every other book on LibGDX is woefully outdated save for Packt's other book on the topic, "Learning LibGDX Game Development, 2nd Edition". I would still rather choose this book, though, because it is a faster, easier read that will get you at your keyboard working on your own games faster. However, the true scholars among us may want to read this book cover-to-cover first and then grab Learning LibGDX 2nd Ed and pick through some of the chapters on more advanced topics and cross-platform mobile development. You would really be prepared for anything following that path!

This is an excellent book for the beginner.

If you know a bit of Java and are interested in game development then this is the book to get.
It has clear concise examples of games and takes you through step by step so you can see how they come together.

I wish I had had this book two years ago it would have saved me a lot of time.

Wait I'm lost!

Too many mistakes inside this book. It teaches good concepts, however sometimes it skips important things. This book is supposed to be for beginner but then it leaves us lost for a couple of minutes. I had to check the source code more than 4 times so far because the boom adds code without even letting you know of it. And when you follow the instructions it won't run because you don't have the whole code. The code can only be found in the source code folder or the next chapters. I don't know if I got the first version without anything fixed inside the book because I got it from Amazon, but I checked and double checked and there are not any pages missing.

Contents of the book described shortly by the title of the book 'Current therapy in Orthodontics'. It's totally true!
Current concepts are written by the authors who are experts of their field. Almost every chapter is interesting. This book was added to me an ability to look from different perspectives for my patients. It's worth every penny you pay.

An Enigma Wrapped Up In A Letter

Although not quite unique, Thomas Pynchon's approach to narration is extremely unusual. Often he seems to drone on in endless detail. At times his books read like a description of a vaudeville slapstick routine. Commonly, narrative structure, presumably at the heart of most novels, seems abandoned, or even purposely ignored. The upshot of this is that Thomas Pynchon's novels are strange, and decidedly not for everyone.
Of course the flip side is that for those who find Pynchon to their liking he is a rare treat, an intriguing enigma that you simply cannot stop talking about. Such is the case with V., a novel that over the years has shown a propensity to spark almost endless debate. Ostensibly it is the story of two men, Stencil and Benny Profane. Benny spends the greater part of the novel tramping around New York City with his friends, the Whole Sick Crew, generally not doing much of anything except procrastinating and running through various jobs and friends. Stencil spends most of the novel a quest of sorts, using a unique technique to track down details about an elusive and mysterious woman known only as V.
It has been noted that it is a technique of Pynchon's to surround the reader in layer after layer of detail and leave her to ferret out some sense; V. is certainly in keeping with that tradition. Wrapped up in this book is enough social critique, pop culture, historical theory, hilarious humor, and prediction of the future to make the reader's head spin like the roulette wheel at a casino. Rather than a shortcoming, this overwhelming downpour of data is one of the best parts of V., as there is just enough cohesion among the disparate elements that certain associations, even theories, can be developed. But are the associations really there or just in the reader's head? That is one of the questions Pynchon aches to ask.
Also central to V. is the idea of mechanization and routinization. Several characters in V. (including V herself) become more and more mechanized as time passes. Further, several elements of V. suggest the mechanization of society. Linked to this idea of mechanization is that of routinization, and Pynchon seems to say that the mechanization of modern life has helped create a society that is locked in routine. This theme of routinazation is found in both large and small instances. On the small side is Benny Profane (among others) who is continually unable to break out of the boundaries he has set on his life. ...
I feel my review of V. would not be complete without a few words about Pynchon's amazing breadth of knowledge. Diverse places such as New York City, Malta, Paris, and Africa are made the setting for several of the book's scenes and these locations are discussed with such authority, knowledge, and familiarity that the reader is convinced that Pynchon must have spent five years living in each. Additionally Pynchon integrates a great deal of information into the plot of V. A sampling of such information would include: explicit procedures for a nosejob, World War I fighter pilots, naval vessels, jazz musicians, Machiavelli, modern art, classical art, automobile safety tests, and the Holy Bible. Even at the tender age of 24 Pynchon had filled his head with enough information to inscribe nearly each of the 500 pages of V. with a certain subtext or reference.
Rather than review V. by presenting a plot summary I have tried to express a few of the ideas Pynchon works with. I have done this because V. thrives on non-linearity and a plot summary would be pointless and would do little to give a potential reader a true feel for what V. might be like. Instead I have chosen a few elements that I feel are at the heart of V., and have discussed them. For those who enjoy immersing themselves in a book and look forward to thorough discussions when they are done there are few books I can recommend above V. But for those who prefer more traditional, even formulaic, books I should warn that V., while in my opinion excellent, may not be to their liking. Despite these admonitions I would recommend this book to as many people as possible, as I do believe that everyone should experience V. This fine book may be a difficult taste to acquire, but one well worth the effort.

Terrible Typos

I give this book four stars because it challenges the reader and is psychedelic as hell. I deduct two stars for persistent and annoying typographical errors that occur very often.

Examples:
Page 340, Second Paragraph: "I write this during a night raid, down in the abandoned sewer. It is raining outside. The only fight is from phosphorus flares above the city, a few candles in here, bombs, Elena is beside me, holding the child who sleeps drooling against her shoulder."

Page 341 Third Paragraph: "First mention oaf Elena Xemxi comes from Fausto I, shortly after Maratt's marriage."

The first example is obvious that "The only fight" should be "The only light". The second is also glaringly stupid, "oaf" should be "of".

I hope the oaf who proofread this novel is fired forsooth!

Wire We Hear

As a poor schlemiel seeking meaning in the mysteries of the human experience, I read V after having felt that my senses had been affected by the experience of reading Gravity's Rainbow. In an era where people strive to be as "holistic" as possible in their interpretation of life's events, V at the very least offers a symbolic representation of a gradual narrowing of focus that accompanies any investigation. One coul d argue that this process lies at the core of our very "understanding" of anything. Recall that this novel was written by a young author, possibly trying to impress as young men do, that which is important to us. That to which we devote great time and effort in pursuit of. The fertile delta? A shady grove, my darling? I would be delighted to read a comparable work from the sensibility of a female's point of view. May I be so bold as to suggest a title? It would be "I", possibly subtitled "Wire We Hear", with abundant allusions to stringed musical instruments and other phallable symbolism.

About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Joel F. Houston is the John B. Hall Professor of Finance at the University of Florida. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College. Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Houston was an Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Joel's research is primarily in the areas of corporate finance and financial institutions, and his work has been published in a number of top journals including THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. Professor Houston also currently serves as an Associate Editor for the JOURNAL OF MONEY, CREDIT AND BANKING, the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL SERVICES RESEARCH and the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL ECONOMIC POLICY. Since arriving at the University of Florida in 1987, Joel has received 19 teaching awards, and has been actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate education. In addition to co-authoring leading textbooks in financial management, Dr. Houston has participated in management education programs for the PURC/World Bank Program, Southern Company, Exelon Corporation and Volume Services America. Joel enjoys playing golf and tennis and spending time with his wife (Sherry) and two children (Chris and Meredith). About the Author
PAUL-ALAN JOHNSON, PhD, is Senior Lecturer and Director of Theory in the School of Architecture at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He is a chartered architect and a leading authority on Australian public housing and dwelling design. Dr. Johnson is also a consultant on architectural history, design, and aesthetics to government departments and environmental groups. He is internationally known for his work in geometry and symbolism in colonial town planning.

Undone by his own scholarship

This work has 120 sub-chapter-sized chunks on all manner of topics concerning architectural theory. Think of them as 120 bite-size essays. Snuggle into bed, drop a sleeping pill into your cup of cocoa, and while you sip your velvety chocolate goodness you can easily read an essay before falling into the embrace of Morpheus.

What you will gain from that exercise, I am not entirely sure. Mr Johnson has gone to an enormous amount of effort to explore pretty much everything that might come under the rubric of a "theory of architecture". The book is well worth reading for that effort alone, as it at least gives a framework for thinking, and it is certainly a must read for any postgrad at an American Ivy League architecture school looking for source material.

But Mr Johnson's scholarship and work undoes him in the end. In his lengthy-- and very well organised book-- he shows that there is no such thing as a "theory of architecture"; that is all just a cobbled-together mess, drawing bits from here, bits from there. His very chapter organisation demonstrates that.

That the discipline of architecture has utterly failed to construct any coherent theories is no fault of Mr Johnson. That Mr Johnson has failed to realise that, is his own fault.

Drawing from a wide collection of sources, "The Theory of Architecture" is a perfect beginning to understanding the paradigms that have shaped western architectural heritage--this book does not pretend to be something it is not. It is an honest, functional, and explicit work that should not be overlooked.

This book is essential to anyone learning how to view the Eye with a Slit Lamp. For Ophthalmic Photography
the book provides both illustrations and photographic examples to explain how to best document Eye Pathology
with a Slit Lamp and camera. I was involved in Eye Photography for 48 years and used this book often until I
retired and left it behind. I purchased this as a gift to a friend who had much experience with a Slit Lamp but no
Photography experience. In my opinion there is none better.

Remen is one of a growing number of physicians exploring the spiritual dimension of the healing arts. "Coherent, elegant, mysterious, aesthetic," she writes. "When I first earned my degree in medicine I would not have described life in this way. But I was not on intimate terms with life then." Now Remen is awed by the vitality of the life force, which she witnesses through her work counseling cancer patients and their doctors at Commonweal, a cancer-help center in California, and through her keen eye for the depths of ordinary people. Remen tells of those who, having fallen ill, discovered previously untapped wells of fortitude and who, ironically, gained a peace of mind they had never known when well. She often turns common wisdom on its head. Discussing the meaning of suffering, she cites one woman who mourned the loss of her chest pains after corrective surgery. She writes inspirationally about a new vision of healing and living that incorporates the value of the soul. More than a manual on holistic medicine, this collection of case studies takes readers from the beginning of the "life force" through the judgment traps of modern life into an open-hearted mystery of embracing life at a friend's table. Dr. Remen is a Blessing

Several friends had told me about Kitchen Table Wisdom over the years, and I just put off purchasing it. Then while recovering in the hospital from surgery, the chaplin suggested I read it. I read it during my recovery and have not stopped reading it since. There are so many lessons in the book, and Dr. Remen's selection of stories and writing style present an education on how to be human and to develop a deeper understanding of the humanity each one of us posseses. I look at my life, and those around me in a different way since I read the book. Dr. Remen has taught me that we all have the capacity to make our life a blessing and she is truly a blessing to all that read her words.

Wisdom Wrapped In A Story

If I was sitting across the table and complaining to Rachel Remen about something going on in my life, I am certain she would give me a pearl of wisdom wrapped in a story. Not only am I wiser for the reading of Kitchen Table Wisdom, I am more human.

This book contains approximately eighty extremely short stories from Remen’s counseling practice, primarily with cancer patients. Many passages left me with tears in my eyes. And though the stories were about her patients and coworkers aha moments, it was I who was illuminated. I cried over my negative attitudes and my courage.

Remen exposed me to myself by telling stories of her own experiences as a physician, and then as a counselor. She went to medical school at a time when there were not many women doctors. In order to be successful, she covered over her own tenderness with clinical expertise. Through turns of circumstances interspersed in the book, she uncovered much of the softness that her Jewish grandfather had instilled in her.

Her transparency about her own journey is refreshing, which in turn suggests to the reader that they, too, may have something to discover about their own life.

I was particularly moved by a story of a male patient in the final stages of cancer. What he loved more than anything about seeing his oncologist, he told Remen, were the conversations they would have at the end of his appointments. This doctor was the only person in his life who he felt completely understood what he was going through. Eventually his doctor said there was nothing more he could do; though additional chemotherapy might prolong his life. He did not want more chemotherapy, so the doctor released him from his care. He was devastated; yet he resumed treatments just to have those short conversations! The story continues. Remen is also the counselor of the man’s oncologist. This doctor came to Remen because he felt his life did not matter. He believed if he died no one would miss him!

In three pages, I have been given a beautiful story. Inside the story I see more clearly the value of listening to others with an open heart. And though Remen cannot tell the oncologist of the great impact he was making on one man’s life, she does tell me that even if I cannot see it, my life is significant to someone.

Kitchen Table Wisdom is a must read for everyone who desires to expand their humanness.
