The bad thing is that there are not many drawings and images, even so there are five books. , One image each page almost, and I can finish reading all five books the in half hour. They can compress into one book instill of five and make it cheaper.

A Solid Sanskrit Grammar

This is probably the best all-round textbook for learning Sanskrit. Its closest
competitors are Goldman's "Devavanipraveshika" and Coulson's "Teach Yourself
Sanskrit". Maurer's work improves upon both in several ways: 1.It treats Sanskrit
in its Indo-European linguistic context, which will be a reason that many will
come to the study of the language. Previously Mayrhofer's "Sanskrit Grammar" or
Burrow's "Sanskrit Language", neither of which are pedagogic, had to be consulted
by a student interested in historical linguistics. 2.It presents the basic
grammar thoroughly with plentiful vocabulary and practice material for the
beginner. The reasons that prevent me from giving it five stars are these:
1. Price 2. Somewhat uninspired selection of readings. After all, with the
largest world literature, Maurer could have done better than relying on the old war-horse of "Nala and Damayanti", which continues the tradition of
Lanman's "Sanskrit Reader" of a century ago. Goldman, based as it is on the
"Ramayana" excels in this respect, as does Coulson which builds up to an
appreciation of Kalidasa. Few students these days will be satisfied with the
soupy Nala tale when the Bhagavad Gita, the Kama Sutra, the Upanishads and so
many more can be read in its place. Nonetheless, this is a highly recommended book for those who want a sensible, traditional grammar.

Best book for beginners

I teach Sanskrit in Canada, and I've tried using many different textbooks. My goal is to give the student a basic overview of the major components of Sanskrit as quickly as possible, and teach further using authentic Sanskrit literature. This book does exactly that. Instead of teaching grammar topics in the conventional order, it introduces advanced topics right at the beginning in a simplified way, so that students get used to recognizing their usage in context. It also has more thorough explanations of grammar topics than any book I've seen, and uses familiar English examples for comparison. excellent primer

i've been studying sanskrit on my own for 25 years and i own about a half dozen primers. this is an excellent primer, lots of useful charts and information. the pace of the lessons is reasonable for beginners, though wish the translation exercises were worked out maybe at the back of the book so student could check his/her work. two non-content problems: at $65 it's too pricey, and because of the number of pages (ca 850) the binding is thick and it's hard to keep the book open when working the exercises.

I have read this book over maybe 20 or more times. He must have been on acid. I saw the some of the same things he did. Objectivity was not the goal here. Thus the 1 star. But he was not alone. Objectivity was thrown out the door by most Journalist's in the Vietnam War. Vietnam should have been the War to end all US Wars. We get this book by a non-combatant which actually comes down to self serving junk for publication in a national magazine which of course gave fiction to Francis Coppola and his movie. As far as Herr the man. I haven't heard any negative's about him. Maybe one more read will fill the holes. I have the original plain tan colored large paperback not the one shown above. With two Brits, Don McCullum and Philip Jones Griffiths, manipulating their photographs thus destroying credibility along with Herr and a dozen other writers we need to rely on other sources for the truth. If there is any truth to be told.

Vietnam combat as it was

This is a nonfiction novel of a Esquire magazine war correspondent in Vietnam and his experiences in Hue and Khe Sahn. It's much better than, say, Matterhorn, as it names names and places and hence historically accurate. Herr' s writing style reminds me of Tom Wolfe. The content is the Vietnam equivalent of Helmet for My Pillow or With the Old Guard from WW 2, told by by someone who was in the thick of combat. Herr consulted on the movies Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket and some of the scenes in both movies are lifted directly from this book. If you liked those movies you'll like this book.

In 1793, three siblings (Amos, 13; Clara, 12; Jonathan, 7) are separated from their father during their immigration, via flatboat, down the Ohio River from their Pennsylvania home to a new beginning in the Ohio wilderness. After an Indian attack, the three are left with no adult support, scant supplies, no transportation, and a cow in tow to journey along the dangerous Shawnee side of the Ohio to the safety of the Marietta settlement. Readers will recognize the breathless pace they've loved in action movies, defined by the eruption of a new crisis on the heels of each crisis resolution, as the siblings struggle against the odds: scavenging food; stealing fire from the Indians; whittling tools for catching supper; rescuing a young Shawnee from drowning; and treating wounds with chickweed and birch leaves. The author's sturdy plot advances distinctly and chronologically, resulting in pure suspense. She keeps her vocabulary action-oriented and her dialogue straightforward. The young Shawnee's presence raises intriguing philosophical questions regarding the nature of communication and the components of true friendship. When Shawnee Indians raid the settlement where their flatboat is moored, 13-year-old Amos and his younger sister and brother free the craft and escape, not knowing whether their father has survived. Forced to land on the Shawnee side of the river after a flaming arrow sets the boat afire, they head for Marietta, Ohio, where they hope to meet their father. On the way, they save an injured Shawnee boy and are captured by warriors from his tribe. Eventually, they learn that they have less to fear from Red Moccasin and his kin than they believed, and Amos finds the courage to "plant a seed of friendship." In this fast-paced adventure, Willis successfully re-creates the anti-Indian prejudice of 1795 when white easterners fought to settle Ohio. Chris Sherman

A bracing work of historical fiction makes an unfriendly place of the Ohio riverfront as three children fight for their lives. In May 1793 the motherless Dunn family--Papa, Amos, Clara, and Jonathan--have almost completed their long trek from eastern Pennsylvania to the place where they hope to make a new life, the Ohio frontier. Amos, 13, is particularly anxious to start over; his memory of a terrible event and his subsequent guilt can be assuaged only in a new place. When the riverboat that is to carry the family to Marietta is ambushed by Indians, a terrible battle ensues, and in the confusion, the boat goes adrift, carrying the Dunn children down river. A second Indian attack causes them to abandon the boat and they land on the north shore of the Ohio River. Their only course is to walk to Marietta, following the river. Along the way, Amos spots a boy clinging to a floating log, and rescues him. He is an Indian boy, barely alive from a gunshot wound, and the children start to nurse him back to health. Still ahead for them: They are taken prisoner by a band of Shawnee, and need to reach Marietta, hoping to see their father again. Willis (Out of the Storm, 1995, etc.) has created a rousing adventure; it will have readers turning the pages and rooting for the spunky Dunn kids all the way. The purchase was a complete waste of money. The book is missing the entire center. The first few chapters are repeated in the middle of the book. The teacher friend I bought if for, threw it away.

A very worthwhile read about some pretty sturdy young pioneers

My 8 year old son and I really enjoyed "Danger Along the Ohio." The strong-willed and self-reliant characters are very appealing. The language is well-crafted - descriptive, but not too difficult. This setting is late-18th century.

During the 20 years leading up to the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, Indians commonly attacked settlers coming down the Ohio in a futile attempt to prevent the settlement of their traditional hunting lands to the south and their homelands to the north. It was the era of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Tecumseh and a host of other storied frontiersmen and women, and Patricia Willis' characters fit right in.

The story revolves around Amos' attempts to befriend the Indian boy he rescues from drowning. Young readers will certainly identify with his awkward and frustrating attempts to win the friendship of his enemy. It is persistence that pays off in the end.

My only criticism is that Ms. Willis reflexively adopts the modern narrative of the sympathetic native and comes off a bit antagonistic toward the settlers. The Indians are vulnerable and human, while the scouts who rescue the children are gruff, forceful, and violent. To be sure, this kind of novel is not the place to depict the realities of savagery committed on both sides of the state of war that existed between these peoples. But Amos would have never been treated with such forbearance. Had Ms Willis managed to successfully bring a more realistic tension to bear on their relationship, with the same result, I would have given it 5 stars.

Still, a very good book about an American era that kids just don't know enough about.
