About the Author
Br. Loughlan Sofield, S.T., a member of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, is senior editor of Human Development magazine. He has taught and presented in over three hundred dioceses on six continents. Sofield has written several award-winning books on collaboration, community, and forgiveness, including Facing Forgiveness.

Carroll Juliano, S.H.C.J., is a member of the Leadership Team of the American Province of the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus. She is the coauthor of Collaboration, Building Community, and Facing Forgiveness.

Completely Helpful for Christian Leaders

When writing Principled Ministry, Brother Sofield and Sister Juliano targeted readers interested in becoming more competent and compassionate Christian leaders. Two "umbrella principles" encompass all of the 30 leadership principles elaborated in Principled Ministry: "Leaders must be people of vision" and "leaders must have a passionate and energizing commitment to that vision." The authors have incorporated elements of psychology, systems theory, Biblical spirituality and their professional experience to develop practical applications for ministry leaders.

These principles range from the simple to the complex. The authors categorize the principles under the sections "The Self-Defined Leader," "The Discerning Leader," "Tasks, Functions, Roles and Skills," and "The Leader as Change Agent." Readers will find all of the topics relevant and the authors as seasoned professionals in the areas they discuss. For each area of leadership, the authors follow a pattern of definition and elaboration using examples and illustrations. They also provide a section for each principle on negative and positive true examples along with questions for reflection.

The authors emphasize the goal of Christian leaders to be faithful and continually striving to grow and do their best as leaders. The book has in mind leaders functioning in the Body of Christ and pursuing personal spiritual growth and the spiritual growth of their followers. These principles are congruent with what the Bible reveals as kingdom of God principles. I think the authors could have taken the liberty to expand more on some of the principles; however, they keep each topic to a few pages and make the book accessible and helpful for all readers - lay and ordained, Roman Catholic and Protestant.

Hired by the wife of a Spanish nobleman to locate her kidnapped husband, the captain-general of Chile, Sharpe and friend Patrick Harper sail halfway around the world on a mission complicated by political intrigue and corruption. Series fans will find the usual strong characterization and action sequences, but some scenes, particularly the storming of the forts protecting the harbor of Valdivia, seem undeveloped and lacking in Cornwell's customary detail. Public libraries should purchase according to demand.

The hero of Cornwell's Sharpe series (Sharpe's Revenge, etc.) reluctantly abandons his Norman hearth and home to search for an old friend gone missing in revolutionary Chile. En route to the new world, there's a stopover on St. Helena and a visit to Sharpe's old adversary, the imprisoned Bonaparte. The Napoleonic wars are over. The Corsican monster is safely imprisoned in the South Atlantic; Sharpe's unloved wife is safely settled back in England; and Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe himself has happily settled into the role of gentleman-farmer, tending to the fields of his aristocratic French mistress, watching his illegitimate children frolic. The bucolic bliss ends, however, with the arrival of Louisa, Countess of Mouromorto, who has come from Spain to beg the retired British rifleman to sail to South America to search for her husband, Sharpe's old friend and comrade-in-arms Don Blas Vivar. The incorruptible Don Blas had gone to Chile to defend the rotten Spanish colonial government against upstart republicans, but he has not been seen or heard from in months. Since Louisa will pay handsomely for his services and since the chateau is in desperate need of repairs, Sharpe reluctantly accepts the commission, hires on his favorite old sergeant, Patrick Harper, and sails round the Horn. His reception is chilly. The colonial general, who should be helping Sharpe, makes nothing but trouble, and Sharpe eventually finds himself becoming more and more sympathetic to the rebels who fight under a disgraced Scottish nobleman. A Story You'll Never Forget.

Although The Long Walk is well written, that has nothing to do with why it's a good book. People should read this book because it chronicles perhaps the most extraordinary true story of human endurance in recorded history.
Slavomir Rawicz is unjustly imprisoned by the Communist Russians early in World War II. He is confined to a cell so small that he literally cannot sit, but must sleep by collapsing with his knees against the wall and his feet steeped in his own waste. He is later transported to Siberia by train, and then marched through the cold countryside to a Soviet Gulag, witnessing the death by exposure and exhaustion of other unfortunate captives along the way. In the prison camp he is set in forced labor, kept in horrendous conditions, over-worked, and underfed.
Near the end of his rope, Rawicz and a handful of companions orchestrate a daring and desperate escape, and then proceed to run for their lives, on foot, toward freedom in India--4,000 miles away. Then the fun begins. They must conquer the frozen Siberian tundra, the Gobi desert, the Himalayan Mountains, starvation, the Soviets, and their own inner demons.
Slavomir's ordeal overshadows every other survival tale I've every read, including Admiral Scott's Polar expedition and Krakauer's Everest disaster. This is up there with the Donner Expedition in terms of grim conditions and the indomitable human spirit. Trust me. Great Story of Endurance and Quest for Liberty

The story in a nutshell: A Polish Army officer is captured by the Soviets after they have joined Hitler in dismembering his country. Rawicz (the officer) is tortured in the Soviet prison system and sent to the Gulags. Faced with misery in Siberia and probable death, he and a band of others escape and undertake a two thousand-mile long journey from the snows of Siberia through Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, and across the Himalayas toward British India and freedom.
This is a great story. The author describes the mindless torture under the Soviet system in a manner that should persuade any reader of the evil of totalitarianism. The description of his train journey, hundred-mile winter hike through a Siberian winter to his gulag and life in the camp is fascinating. His will to survive amidst degradation, the elements and overwhelming odds are a testament to the human thirst for freedom and liberty.
As other reviewers have stated, there are some parts of the book that invite skepticism. His befriending by the camp commandant's wife seems as improbable as it is crucial to his ability to escape. The escapees journey across the Gobi Desert where his group went for many days without water beyond what I understood a person could tolerate. Without any climbing tools, his party went across the Himalayas to India -- a feat that seems fantastic. Also his brief description of spotting what could only be described as the elusive Yetti in the Himalayas stretches credibility (unless it does actually exist).
That being said, this story is exhilarating and I found it believable and enthralling. It is a wonderful adventure story and describes the limits of what the human spirit and mind can endure to survive in freedom. This book has been around for almost fifty years and was given wide play when first introduced. I'm going to assume the lack of anything debunking this widely told tale (or, anything that I could find) argues for the author's veracity -- certainly that frame of mind allows one to enjoy a stirring story.

WARNING - THIS IS A WORK OF FICTION

I am an avid reader of non-fiction adventure stories. Based on the positive reviews of The Long Walk, I was anxious to get my hands on a copy and dig in. Now that I have read it, I must say that it was a real disappointment. This book is not for any objective reader expecting an authentic non-fiction adventure story. If you're just interested in distracting yourself with a bizarre adventure fantasy, and are willing to forget reason and ignore the outright lies, then you might like it. But it is definitely not a true account of the author's experiences as trumpeted in the subtitle and text.

Rawicz (through his tabloid journalist ghost writer, Ronald Downing) makes countless outlandish claims that are not supported by any witnesses, documentation, or even detailed descriptions on his part. Moreover, his assertions often defy the laws of science and common sense. Here are but a few examples:

- reaching his destination after wandering a year through 4,000 miles of wilderness with no maps, supplies?
- trekking 12 days across a torrid stretch of the Gobi desert in mid summer with no water or food?
- crossing the Himalayas, summiting mtn after mtn in only worn moccasins and a few ragged articles of clothing?
- encountering a yeti and taunting it like those guys in the beef jerky commercial (no joke-it's in the book!)?
- Rawicz's inability to provide the most basic details about his ordeal such as the first name of one of his closest companions on the trek (the American, "Mr. Smith"!) or where he was finally picked up by the British Army or the hospital he claimed to recover in?

the list goes on and on...

The BBC did an investigation into Rawicz's story and also concluded it was a fraud. They found gov't documents showing that Rawicz was sent to the Siberian gulag for murder (which may or may not be true, but why would he lie?), not trumped-up spying charges as he claims. Soviet documentation also shows that Rawicz was released from the prison camp under Amnesty (along with other Polish prisoners) granted by Stalin in 1942 - so that these prisoners could be used to fight the Germans in the Middle East instead of chopping wood in Siberia. In a letter to the BBC, even Rawicz's own children appear to concede that his account was fictional. I want to emphasize here that my intent is not to diminish the true stories of those who may have survived or escaped from Siberian prison camps during WWII, but this fabrication does more to cast doubt on actual survival stories than legitimize them.

For those interested in fascinating, true, and compelling adventure and survival stories, I recommend the following well-documented accounts: Don Starkell's `Paddle to the Amazon', `The Journals of Lewis and Clark' (edited by DeVoto), and `Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage'.

Impossible to Read

I ordered this book because I could not find my copy of the Revised Edition, a book that is worth reading and studying over and over. I thought so much of the book and its lessons that I decided to order the newest edition. The day before the new edition arrived I found my dog-eared, page-stained copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and revisited a couple of my favorite pages.

Today the newest edition arrived. It might be a masterpiece in it's genre, but I'll never know. The type face is so small I, literally, cannot read the side bars, and reading the body text is not much better. The amount of ink used for the impressions is minimal and adds to the difficulties. A book does no good if half of it cannot be read and the other half is difficult to read due to typeface or any other physical limits. A direct comparison of font size between the two books makes it very apparent it isn't just a grumpy whiny old man's grump of the day.

Publisher should be ashamed. If I can read the last edition with no problems I think I should be permitted to read the latest edition just as easily.

This 4th edition is a disappointment.

The '89 edition is far superior to the 4th. In the 4th, the paper is thin enough to see through. Many of the drawing instructions are reproduced far too light and hard to see, much less to study. The chapter on color is GONE. Most of the interesting and informative margin notes are gone (though the space is still there), and the few that are there are in print so tiny it's not easy to read. In chapter 6, the student is advised to lift lights to create shadows, but this is not really taught until chapter 10 on lights and shadows. Why is this thrust on the student in chapter 6 when they haven't been taught it yet and may end up doing it in an incorrect way? And last, the index is incomplete, and I had to go through many pages in order to find things, since all the pages for a subject were not listed. The '89 edition is excellent.

Nearly perfect - 4.99 stars, rounded down to make a point

Don't get me wrong, I love this book. I nearly read it all in three sittings and I really love the approach.

The very good:
Excellent book for beginners, it will coach you to draw what you see, not what you think.
Absolute must if you are interested in the dichotomy between left and right brain hemispheres and how they interact. The introduction captivated me, and further exercises are great experiments to experience the switching of processing between the two halves of your brain first hand. I knew about it but I didn't think it could be made so obvious.

The only good:
The author describes five skills that together compose drawing skills:
- Perception of edges
- Perception of spaces
- Perception of relationships
- Perception of lights and shadows
- Perception of gestalt
The first four could be reduced to three in my view but I am willing to accept the four. If the first four were properly rendered, the fifth would derive naturally. Once a face is out of proportions, the correction of resemblance will require correcting the rendering of the first four. "Gestalt" here is not a skill, it is an effect.

The not good:
Very little that I find unacceptable, really. Mostly in the explanation of perspective.
The explanation of point of view is perfect except it starts by "In a one point perspective drawing...".
No. Every realistic drawing (the point of this book) has one point of view and only one, however many vanishing points there are. Yet this statement is still accurate, it just suggests that the definition does not apply to multiple points drawings. I was willing to overlook that one.

Then on page 151 a drawing purporting to explain two points perspective using two cubes commits the sin the author has been warning us against since the beginning of the book: she draws what she thinks and not how it is. The drawing represents two cubes and two vanishing points for each - so far so good assuming that the cubes do not have parallel faces. The problem is that the two vanishing points of the farther cube are between the two vanishing points of the closer cube, which is not possible if these are indeed cubes as stated in the caption. If the cubes have parallel faces then their vanishing points are common; if not, they alternate on the horizon as both faces of the second cube turn in the same direction with regards to the first cube.
(I attach a picture of the book and one of a quick drawing on my whiteboard - I don't pretend my drawing is perfect but it illustrates my qualms.)

I can hear people calling me picky on this one and I certainly feel that way.
One full star off just for that?
Well, I am following an art class and some of my fellow students have a very hard time getting over this one.
To compound the confusion, the drawing frame in the book picture shows another horizontal line without explanation, leading some to infer this is the "actual" horizon.
(For the records I studied Math and then mechanical engineering before CAD systems were ubiquitous, which meant designing mechanical parts on paper with compass, tees and rulers, and I have been drawing for well over 40 years. I took this drawing class to qualify for painting next year.)

Finally the author does not mention that vanishing points do not have to be on the horizon, as if all groups of parallel lines in the 3D world had to be either horizontal (vanishing points on the horizon) or vertical (represented as parallel lines in most usual drawings). Three points perspective is barely mentioned about tall buildings drawn from street level and to state it is very rare in drawing.

All in all this remains an *EXCELLENT BOOK*, clearly the best I have seen about teaching realistic drawing so far.
Best for
- People who want to learn to draw realistically
- People interested in the brain processes involved in drawing and in particular the processing differences of the two brain hemispheres.
The only caveat is about perspective.
Too bad.

The definitive tome on the Bauhaus and a work of art in itself

The Bauhaus was the defining birthplace of modernism, and one that continues to influence artistic and aesthetic direction today.

This volume is comprehensive, and is in itselt, as an object that reflects Bauhaus sensibility - a reflection of the movement.

I have been seeking a copy off an on for over 30 years but they are hard to come by - I have only seen one or two (hardcover) ones for sale in that time. The copy I have purchased is second hand but in fine condition - including the beautifully articulated slipcase.

One of the great beneifts of the internet, and in particular, when it comes to books, is Amazon's (and a few other websites) functionality in bringing together buyers and sellers for out of print, and relatively rare books, still at affordable prices.

I purchased my copy from the US and had it delivered to Australia, for a third of the cover price the book was, 30 years ago.

Even ignoring inflacon, this is surely a bargain.

Please note that my comments refer to the hardcover version only, The later produced softcover, is just a book, in comparison.

A timeless classic it enjoys pride of place in my personal library.

A great deal of information, focused on individuals and their contributions to the Bauhaus. ALL pages are in black and white, which is always a great disappointment when reading about art, design or architecture. Considering this production shortcoming, the book is overpriced. Its written content, very useful and thorough.

About the Author
John N. Ferdico holds a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and a B.A. in Sociology from Dartmouth College. He is a former Assistant Attorney General and Director of Law Enforcement Education for the State of Maine. Other books he has published are FERDICO'S CRIMINAL LAW AND JUSTICE DICTIONARY and the MAINE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER'S MANUAL. Ferdico currently writes and runs a legal publishing company in Bowdoinham, Maine.

Henry F. Fradella is a Professor in and Associate Director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. He earned a B.A. in psychology from Clark University, both a master's in forensic science and a J.D. from The George Washington University, and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary justice studies from Arizona State University. In addition to having published more than 75 scholarly articles, comments, and reviews, Dr. Fradella is the author of eight other books, including four published by Wadsworth: AMERICA'S COURTS AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; CRIMINAL PROCEDURE FOR THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONAL; KEY CASES, COMMENTS, AND QUESTIONS ON SUBSTANTIVE CRIMINAL LAW; and FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY: THE USE OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE IN CIVIL AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. Dr. Fradella has twice served as a guest editor of the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice and as the Legal Literature editor of West's Criminal Law Bulletin for four terms (Volumes 41-44). A fellow of the Western Society of Criminology, he currently serves as the editor of the society's journal, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Law & Society. He teaches a variety of courses, including criminal law, criminal procedure, courts and judicial processes, and forensic psychology.

Christopher D. Totten has an A.B. from Princeton University, and a J.D. and LL.M. (Masters in Law) from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a member of the State Bar of Maryland and has worked as an attorney and client advocate at a number of law firms. He is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice (Law) at Kennesaw State University, where he teaches numerous law and criminal justice courses to undergraduate and graduate students. His scholarship spans criminal law and procedure, international crime (with a focus on adjudication), and interdisciplinary law and social science research (with a focus on courts/ jurisprudence and police attitudes). He has published in key journals such as the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, the Criminal Law Bulletin, the New Criminal Law Review, the Berkeley Journal of International Law, and the Georgetown Journal of International Law. Finally, he is the criminal law commentator for the Criminal Law Bulletin (Volumes 46-51).

Good book, needed it for class but it is pretty informative and easy to read. Would recommend the 10th edition though if you need to save money, essentially the exact same book the only difference is that the exclusionary rule is in different chapters

I ordered one that was in good condition and at first I thought it was okay

I purchased this book for school. I ordered one that was in good condition and at first I thought it was okay. The more I got into the book there was some writing and highlighting and now that I'm in the middle of the book even just having the book open is making the book fall apart. There was a part in the middle where it was starting to fall apart but its just getting worse and worse. With ordering a book that is in good condition I wouldn't except this to happen, and not after using it for 2 weeks.
